How we bring the deceased home from your country
Neighbouring countries
Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova border Ukraine. From there we go by road straight to the border, without a flight. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection.
Via neighbouring countries
From Czechia we go through Poland or Slovakia, from Austria through Slovakia or Hungary, and from Lithuania through Poland. During the call we will work out which route is fastest and cheapest in your case.
Distant countries
From Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland and other distant countries, the body usually travels part of the way by air to an airport near Ukraine: Warsaw, Rzeszów or Chișinău. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours, and then we continue in our vehicle. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.
Each country has its own documents
Every country requires a death certificate and a permit to take the body out of the country. But the documents go by different names, and different authorities issue them. A few examples:
| Country | Permit to take the body out | Who issues it |
|---|---|---|
| Austria | body passport (Leichenpass) | the district authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft); in statutory cities, the Magistrat |
| Germany | body passport (Leichenpass) | depends on the federal state: the municipality, the public health office or the district office |
| Netherlands | laissez-passer (lijkenpas) | the municipality where the death occurred |
| Italy | mortuary passport (passaporto mortuario) | the municipality (comune) where the death occurred |
| Spain | exit authorisation for the body (autorización de salida del cadáver) | the Sanidad Exterior service |
| Romania | mortuary passport (pașaport de transport mortuar) | the county public health directorate |
| United Kingdom | Form 103 “Out of England” (for England) | the coroner |
Even where the law requires a licensed funeral home, we run the whole case ourselves, so you do not need to look for anyone. In Germany, for example, the Ukrainian embassy requires the deceased's international passport, and we can prepare the documents on the relatives' behalf. We will give you the exact list for your country during the call. Which documents are needed →
What the Ukrainian side requires
The death of a Ukrainian citizen abroad is registered by a Ukrainian consul. Registration and the first death certificate are free of consular fees.
At the border, Ukrainian customs require two documents: the death certificate, and a certificate from an authority of the country where the person died confirming that the body and the coffin contain no prohibited items. A Ukrainian consulate or embassy must legalise this certificate. The body is carried in a hermetic metal coffin, which is put under official seal.
Many European countries are parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses. Between those countries, the body travels with a single document, the laissez-passer. Ukraine is not a party to the agreement, so a laissez-passer alone is not enough to bring the body into Ukraine. The documents required by Ukrainian law are needed as well. We collect them before departure, so that the body is not held up at the border. How it all fits together is explained in the article “What body repatriation is and how it works”.

Common questions
Which cities do you collect from?
From any city in the countries listed. The exact price depends on the distance to the border or the airport, and we will give it to you once you tell us the city.
Why do prices differ so much between countries?
Each country has a different route, different documents and different rules for preparing the body. From Poland or Czechia we drive a few hundred kilometres. From Italy or Ireland the journey includes an air leg, and the paperwork takes longer.
I do not know which documents have already been issued. What should I do?
That is not a problem. Give us the contact details of the hospital or the morgue. We will find out ourselves and tell you what else is needed.
The person died in a country with no Ukrainian consulate. What should I do?
Call us. We will tell you which Ukrainian embassy or consulate is responsible for that country and what to do next.
Can you bring an urn with ashes home from any country?
Yes. Bringing an urn with ashes home to Ukraine costs from €100, depending on the country. More about urn transport →
