Repatriation of the deceased from Sweden to Ukraine

from €2,900 including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. We will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

Summary. The price of bringing the deceased home from Sweden is from €2,900: it covers the documents, the coffin and the road to your town, while the funeral in Ukraine is a separate service. The body can leave Sweden only with the passersedel pass from the Tax Agency (Skatteverket), and the coffin must be moisture-proof with an absorbent inside. We go by plane and then by road (air leg from 2.5 hours) or by road with a ferry across the Baltic Sea and then through Poland. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Tell us the city and the address and we will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

From the first call to home: how it works in Sweden

To take a body out of Sweden, you need a special pass from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). To get it, we need the medical documents and our certificate about the coffin. We issue that certificate. We put everything together and prepare the Ukrainian documents. If the hospital or the police ask who is arranging the transport, give them our number +380 77 882 77 77. We will settle the details ourselves. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German, so you or the hospital can call us in English. If an international call is expensive for you, write to us on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram, or leave your number and we will call you back.

  1. We listen and give you the price

We ask where the person died, where the deceased is now and which documents you already have. We give you the cost straight away.

  2. We contact the hospital

The doctor who confirmed the death draws up the death certificate (dödsbevis) no later than the first working day afterwards. Another document is the certificate of the cause of death. We arrange with the hospital when the deceased can be collected.

  3. We prepare the coffin

We place the deceased in a coffin that meets the Swedish rules for taking a body out of the country, and issue a certificate confirming this and that the coffin holds only the body and personal belongings.

  4. We obtain the passersedel

This is the pass for the body from Skatteverket, in effect a “body passport”. It is issued once the certificate for burial can be issued and our certificate about the coffin is in hand.

  5. We handle the Ukrainian side

We arrange the translations, the certification, the certificate of no prohibited items and the documents for the Embassy of Ukraine.

  6. We bring the deceased home

By plane to an airport near Ukraine and then on by road, or all the way by road. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town.

  7. We close the Swedish formalities

After the body has left Sweden, the person who arranged the border crossing must return a copy of the pass to Skatteverket within 2 weeks, marked to show that the body has left. We do this too.

Documents in Sweden

The Swedish names are long, but there are not many documents. Here is what is issued and what we do with it.

What Sweden issues

  • Dödsbevis: the death certificate. It is written by the doctor who confirmed the death.
  • Intyg om dödsorsaken: the certificate of the cause of death. The doctor sends it to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).
  • Intyg för gravsättning: the certificate for burial.
  • Passersedel: the pass for the body from Skatteverket. It is drawn up in Swedish and in English or French, and it travels with the body all the way.
  • Our certificate that the coffin meets the requirements and contains only the body and personal belongings.

What we take on

  • We gather the medical documents and issue the certificate about the coffin.
  • We obtain the passersedel and, after the body has left, return the marked copy.
  • We have the documents certified as Ukraine requires and translated into Ukrainian.
  • We put together everything the embassy and Ukrainian border customs will ask for.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
  • Your passport and a document showing you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.

Sweden is a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses; Ukraine is not. So for the Ukrainian border we prepare a separate death certificate and a certificate that there are no prohibited items in the body or the coffin. The general list of papers is on the “Documents” page.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Sweden

The Embassy of Ukraine in Sweden is in Lidingö, a suburb of Stockholm.

  • The death of a Ukrainian citizen abroad is usually registered by the consul for the place of death, residence, discovery of the body or burial. We will check with the embassy whether this is possible in your case.
  • Swedish documents for the consul must be certified and translated into Ukrainian.
  • No consular fee applies to the registration of the death and the first death certificate.
  • For the social protection authorities the consul provides a certificate, which the family needs to claim the funeral allowance.
  • The embassy certifies the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin. It is needed at the Ukrainian border.

For what to do in the first hours, see “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”.

How we bring the deceased home from Sweden

Sweden is far from Ukraine, so the journey always has several stages. We choose the route for your case: the city, the timing and the family's wishes.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala, Västerås and from any other Swedish town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or from another place where the deceased is. The route and the amount are worked out for the town, the timing and the family's wishes.

Plane and road

One option is a flight to an airport near Ukraine, with the coffin in the cargo hold, and then on by road in our vehicle. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.

Road only

By road with a ferry across the Baltic Sea, and then on through Poland. It takes longer, but there is no handling at airports.

How long it takes

The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. The actual time depends on how quickly the documents are issued.

The coffin for transport out of Sweden

Swedish rules require a coffin that does not let moisture through, with an absorbent material inside. That is either a wooden coffin with walls at least 2 cm thick and a zinc coffin inside, or a wooden coffin with walls at least 3 cm thick, lined with zinc. For a flight it also needs a pressure-equalising filter, or it must be strong enough. A coffin sent as ordinary freight is packed so that it does not look like a coffin, and is marked “handle with care”.

Ukraine accepts the body in a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. A coffin that meets the Swedish rules and has a zinc liner suits both Sweden and Ukraine. More on the pages “Coffins and sealed metal liners” and “Air transport”.

When the body in Sweden has been cremated

We collect the urn with ashes from the crematorium or the place of storage and bring it to Ukraine. Either by plane and then by road, or by road with a ferry across the Baltic Sea and on through Poland.

The Swedish cremation papers are translated into Ukrainian and certified; what exactly an urn needs, we check for your case. For the border we add the certificate of no prohibited items, legalised by the Embassy of Ukraine, and the death certificate. The free-form customs statement is prepared by us.

Bringing the urn home costs from €700. Read more on the page “Urn transport”, and about customs and flights in the article “Customs clearance of an urn with ashes”.

Price of repatriation from Sweden

  • local, consular and border documents
  • preparing the body for the journey

Questions about repatriation from Sweden

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Sweden?

From €2,900 for the whole journey home: documents, preparing the body, the coffin for transport, transport and customs formalities. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. We will give you the exact amount as soon as we know the cities and the type of transport.

How long does the journey take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. If part of the journey is by plane, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The documents usually take longest, so we work on the Swedish and the Ukrainian papers in parallel.

What should I do first?

The first steps are near the top of this page, and the details are on the page “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”. Do not pay anyone until you know the full price of bringing the deceased home.

What is the body passport (passersedel)?

The passersedel is the pass for the body issued by Skatteverket, in effect a “body passport”. Without it, the body cannot be taken out of Sweden. It is drawn up in Swedish and in English or French and travels with the coffin. We obtain it.

Do I need to travel to Sweden?

In the majority of cases, no. We act on your behalf. If some office asks for a relative to sign in person, we will let you know in good time. What you can do from home is in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.

Which documents do you need from the family?

The deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, a document showing you are a relative and a power of attorney for us. The medical documents, the passersedel, the translations and the papers for the embassy are our job.

What kind of coffin is needed? Is embalming required?

The coffin does not let moisture through and has zinc and an absorbent material inside, and for a flight it also has pressure equalisation. It is already in the price. As for embalming: some airlines accept only embalmed bodies, so the decision depends on the route and the carrier. We will tell you in advance if the amount changes. More in “Preparing the body”.

The deceased had insurance. What should I do?

Keep the policy at hand and tell us about it on the first call. The transport must be approved by the insurer, otherwise the compensation can be refused; we deal with that. We will tell you in advance about any part the policy does not cover.

Which cities in Sweden do you collect from?

From any town or village in Sweden: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Give us the address and we will tell you when we can collect the deceased.

Can you bring home an urn with ashes?

Yes, an urn with ashes can be brought home as well. At the Ukrainian border it needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the embassy. It costs from €700. Details: “Urn transport”.
