General
What repatriation of a body means and how it works, in plain words, is explained in the article What body repatriation is and how it works.
What should I do first?
If the death did not happen in a hospital, call the emergency services. In EU countries the number is 112. A doctor will officially confirm the death. Then call us on +380 77 882 77 77. We will tell you what to say to the hospital or the police, and how to inform the Ukrainian consulate. If there was an insurance policy, tell us about it. For a step-by-step guide, see the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.
What do you take care of?
The whole way: contact with the hospital, the morgue and local offices, documents in the country of death, the apostille and translations, consular certificates, preparing the body, a coffin that meets the transport rules, the route, the border and customs. The family only needs to give us a few documents and a power of attorney.
Do I need to travel abroad?
In most cases, no. A power of attorney is enough, and we act on your behalf. Sometimes local authorities ask a relative to sign an application. Then we prepare the papers and explain how to sign them.
Do you work at night and at weekends?
Yes, 24/7, with no days off. Call +380 77 882 77 77 or write to us on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram at the same number.
Is the consultation free?
No. The first phone consultation is free: we ask about your situation, tell you what to do next and give you a price. The decision is yours.
Which countries do you bring people home from?
From across Europe and beyond. Prices by country are on the Prices page. If your country is not listed, call us. We can bring your loved one home from there too.
Who are you?
XREQUIEM is a funeral home that works across all of Ukraine. We are part of the GRG group of companies (Global Ritual Group). The owner is Oleg Zdendiak. More on the page About the XREQUIEM funeral home.
Do you work in my city?
Yes. We work across all of Ukraine: farewell, burial, a hearse, transport of the deceased and of relatives, funeral goods. We serve your city at your address and on your date. What it costs to bring the hearse to the venue depends on the address, and we name the amount before departure. And when we bring the body from abroad, delivery to any city in Ukraine is already included in the price. The funeral is a separate service. Its cost is not included in the price of bringing the body home. Ask us during the call and we will tell you what we can take on. More on the page Funeral arrangements. Across Ukraine we do everything ourselves, and one of our coordinators handles your case from start to finish. The cities we deliver to are listed on the page Cities of Ukraine.
Price and payment
Our prices are “from” prices and cover the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. The full table is on the Prices page.
Do you sign a contract? Can the price change?
Yes, we work under a contract. First we give you the price for your case and fix it in the contract before the transport starts. Payment for repatriation: 50% at the start and 50% after completion, or 100% at the start; we write this into the contract. For organisational services, such as a funeral, a prepayment of at least 25% is required, especially when we book something in advance.
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home to Ukraine?
It depends on the country. Our “from” prices for the whole journey home are in the price table. We will give you the exact amount for your case when we speak: +380 77 882 77 77.
What is included in the price?
Everything needed to bring your loved one home: work with the morgue and the local documents, preparing the body, a coffin with a zinc liner, the journey to your town in Ukraine and handing the deceased over to the family. The full list is in the section What the price includes. The funeral in Ukraine comes on top, as a separate service.
Is the funeral included in the price?
No. The funeral is charged separately. If you want us to organise it too, we give its cost as a separate line.
What does the exact price depend on?
On the city we collect from, the documents the country requires, and the type of transport: by road or with an air leg. Even within one country, the road to the border and the local offices differ from city to city. So we give you the exact amount as soon as we know the city and the documents.
My country is not in the price table. Do you work there?
Yes. We bring people home from there too. Call us and we will tell you the price and the route. See also Repatriation of the deceased from other countries to Ukraine.
Do you transport by plane or by road?
From neighbouring countries (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova) we go by road. From countries further away, part of the journey is by plane to an airport near Ukraine, and then our vehicle takes over. We will tell you which route suits your case during the call.
Who pays for the transport?
Usually the family. If the person had an insurance policy that covers transport of the body, the insurer may pay part of the cost. But a policy often covers the journey only as far as the border or a transport hub in Ukraine. We will check the terms together with you.
Will insurance cover the transport?
It may, if the policy covers repatriation of the body. Send us a photo of the policy. We will check the terms and deal with the insurer ourselves, so you do not lose the cover. Often a policy pays only as far as the border. We will tell you about the rest in advance. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home from abroad.
How can I pay?
You can pay by bank transfer, through payment systems, or in cash at the XREQUIEM office. We tell you the amount and what it includes before any work starts. Get a price.
Is there a state funeral allowance?
When the death is registered, the consul issues a certificate for the social protection authorities. With it, the family applies for the funeral allowance in Ukraine.

Documents and the consulate
Who arranges which document is explained in detail on the page Documents for repatriation to Ukraine.
Which documents does the family need to provide?
The deceased's passport (a photo is enough to start; in some countries the consulate will ask for the original), your passport and contact details, in some countries a document proving you are related, a power of attorney so that we can act on your behalf, and the insurance policy, if there was one. We will tell you exactly what your country requires during the call. The full list is on the Documents page.
What does the Ukrainian consulate do?
It registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen, issues the Ukrainian death certificate and a certificate for the funeral allowance, and legalises the certificate of no prohibited items in the coffin. In many countries it also issues a letter or certificate for taking the coffin or the urn to Ukraine.
Does the consulate charge for registering the death?
Registration of the death by the consul and the first certificate are free of consular fees. Local documents, the apostille and translations may have to be paid for.
Why is an apostille needed?
Ukraine recognises a foreign death certificate only when it is certified with an apostille or legalised, unless an international agreement makes this unnecessary. Ukraine is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention, so for other member countries the apostille replaces legalisation. It is issued by an authority of the country that issued the document.
Who translates the documents into Ukrainian?
The translation must be certified, and we arrange it. In France the Embassy of Ukraine can help: it translates the French death certificate when the body or the ashes are being taken to Ukraine.
What is checked at the Ukrainian border?
The death certificate and a certificate confirming that the body and the coffin contain no prohibited items. This certificate is issued by the country where the death happened and certified by the Ukrainian consulate. The body must be in a sealed, hermetic metal coffin. For customs a short written statement is enough. We prepare all of this.
What is a laissez-passer, and is it enough for Ukraine?
It is a special pass for the body (a “passport for the body”) issued by many European countries. On its own it is not enough for Ukraine: our border needs its own documents as well, and we prepare them.
Timing
How long does repatriation take?
The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. If the route includes a flight, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The exact timing depends on the country, the documents and the type of transport.
What does the timing depend on?
Mostly on how quickly the local authorities issue documents and permits. In the United Kingdom, for example, the flight is not booked until the coroner has given permission to take the body out of the country. After that it depends on the distance and the type of transport.
Should I call you straight away or once the documents are ready?
Straight away. We start working alongside you: we find out where the body is, which documents already exist and what this country requires. That way you do not spend time on steps you do not need.

Urn with ashes
In brief: the documents, taking the urn on a plane, and the price.
How much does it cost to bring an urn with ashes home?
Bringing an urn home is a separate service and simpler than repatriating a body. It costs from €100, depending on the country the urn is in; the price for your country is in the table on the Prices page. More on the page Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine.
Which documents are needed for an urn?
For the Ukrainian border: the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items in the urn, legalised by the consulate, plus a short written statement in free form. Some countries, such as Germany and Austria, also ask for confirmation of the cremation.
Can I take the urn on a plane myself?
An urn can travel in hand luggage or in checked baggage; when we arrange the transport, we agree this with the airline. Airline and country rules differ, so check them before the flight. The urn goes through X-ray screening, so it is packed so that it cannot break.
Does an urn need a “passport for the body”?
The Strasbourg Agreement does not apply to ashes. In Denmark, for example, a ligpas is not needed for ashes. The documents for the Ukrainian border are still required.
Transport by air
Does the plane fly all the way to Ukraine?
We do not promise that. The plane takes the body to an airport in a country next to Ukraine; the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. From there our vehicle takes the body to your town.
How is a body transported by air?
As cargo: on a cargo plane or in the hold of a passenger plane. Whether the coffin is accepted depends on the type of aircraft and on approval from the countries of departure, transit and destination. We agree the documents with all of these countries before booking. More on the Air transport page.
Is embalming required for air transport?
It depends on the country and the airline. Some airlines accept only embalmed bodies, and in Denmark embalming is required if the body travels by air. We will tell you what is needed in your case.
What kind of coffin is needed for a flight?
A hermetic one. For air transport the coffin must have a valve that equalises the pressure, or be strong enough. To bring the body into Ukraine, a sealed, hermetic metal coffin is required.
