What we do for you
The Romanian procedure has many steps. You do not need to know them. Here is how we work through them.
We listen and give you the price
We ask in which city and county the death occurred and where the deceased is now. We tell you the exact price straight away.
We register the death in Romania
On the basis of the doctor's medical certificate, the death is registered at the town hall (primărie). We obtain the death certificate (certificat de deces).
Embalming and the coffin
Romanian law requires embalming for any transport outside the locality where the death occurred. We prepare the body and a hermetically sealed coffin.
The mortuary passport
We obtain the permit to take the body out of the country and the mortuary passport (pașaport de transport mortuar) from the county public health directorate.
We handle the Ukrainian side
Translations, certification, the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest and the certificate for the border.
The border and the journey
Through one of the five road border crossings. We take care of customs clearance.
We hand the deceased over to the family
We bring them to your town. If you need it, we can also organise the funeral anywhere in Ukraine.

Documents in Romania
What Romania issues
- Certificat medical constatator al decesului: the medical certificate of death. It is the main document for registration.
- Certificat de deces: the death certificate. The death is registered at the town hall (primărie) or the local population registry service (S.P.C.L.E.P.) at the place of death within 3 days.
- The permit to take the body out of the country, issued by the public health directorate (DSP) of the county where the death occurred.
- Pașaport de transport mortuar: the mortuary passport for international transport. It is also issued by the county public health directorate (in Bucharest, by the city directorate).
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a copy.
- Your passport and a document showing you are a relative.
- The city and county where the death occurred: the permit to take the body out is issued by the health directorate of exactly that county.
- The date of death and whether the death has already been registered at the town hall: in Romania this must be done within 3 days.
We make the requests to the authorities, wait in the queues and sign; you do not need to speak Romanian. The full list is on the Documents page.
Ukraine's consent for the body to enter
Taking a body out of Romania requires the consent of the country it is going to. For Ukraine, this consent is arranged by the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest. That is why we work with the Embassy from the first day, not at the end.
The Ukrainian border still needs its own documents, so we prepare both parts together.
Embalming and the coffin: what Romania requires
In Romania these rules are stricter than in many countries.
- Embalming is mandatory for any transport of the body outside the locality where the death occurred. Not only abroad.
- The coffin is impermeable and hermetically closed.
- For international transport the coffin is placed in a tightly closed wooden crate.
Ukrainian customs require a hermetic metal coffin that is sealed. We prepare the coffin so that it meets both the Romanian and the Ukrainian rules. The embalming is done by a specialist and, if you wish, we will explain every step to you. More on the pages Preparing the body and Coffins.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Romania
We handle consular matters in Romania through the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest. The consul registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen at the place where the person died or lived, where the body was found, or where they are buried.
- The registration is based on the Romanian medical document and the death certificate, translated into Ukrainian and certified.
- Registering the death and the first Ukrainian death certificate are free of consular fees.
- The consul issues a certificate that is used in Ukraine to claim the funeral allowance.
- The certificate confirming that the body and the coffin contain no prohibited items is certified by the Embassy. Without it, the body cannot cross the border.
If the death happened some time ago and has still not been registered, the consul can register it anyway, with a note about the missed deadline. More about the consul's role is in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Romania
We go by road, in a specialist vehicle. No plane is needed. The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. The exact time depends on how quickly the documents are issued in the county and on the queue at the border. Read how road transport works.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Constanța, Iași, Suceava, Satu Mare and from any other Romanian town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or from another place where the deceased is. The county where the death occurred decides which health directorate issues the permit, so please name the town at once.
There are five road border crossings between Ukraine and Romania. We choose the most convenient one for your town, whether it is in Zakarpattia, Bukovyna or further afield.
| Ukraine | Romania |
|---|---|
| Diakove | Halmeu |
| Solotvyno | Sighetu Marmației |
| Porubne | Siret |
| Diakivtsi | Racovăț |
| Krasnoilsk | Vicovu de Sus |

Questions about repatriation from Romania
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Romania?
From €1,500, including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. What the price consists of is explained in the article “How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad”.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. In Romania the death is registered within 3 days. After that come the permit and the mortuary passport from the county health directorate, and the work with the Embassy. We run these steps in parallel.
Can embalming be declined?
In Romania, no, if the body is being taken outside the locality: the law requires it. Embalming is part of our work, so you do not need to look for a specialist yourself. What preparing the body involves is explained on a separate page.
What kind of coffin is needed?
The coffin must meet the Romanian rules. We prepare one that meets both those rules and the requirements of the Ukrainian border: metal, hermetic and sealed.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport (or a copy), your passport and a document confirming the family relationship. We arrange the medical certificate, the death certificate at the town hall, the DSP permit, the mortuary passport and the translations. You do not need to order embalming separately: it is part of our preparation of the body.
Do I need to travel to Romania?
Usually not. We arrange the embalming, the permit at the county health directorate and the mortuary passport, and we submit the documents to the Embassy in Bucharest ourselves. If someone in the family wants to say goodbye while the deceased is still in Romania, tell us and we will agree a time with the morgue. What can be done from home is covered in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
The death has still not been registered in Romania. What now?
Tell us straight away. In Romania a death is registered within 3 days, so the town hall needs to be contacted as soon as possible, and we will do that. The Ukrainian consul can register a death later too, with a note about the missed deadline.
Which cities in Romania do you collect from?
From any town or city: Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Constanța, Brașov, Suceava, Baia Mare, Satu Mare, Oradea and others.
Which border crossing will you use?
The crossing closest to your town: Diakove, Solotvyno, Porubne, Diakivtsi or Krasnoilsk. For Bukovyna, Porubne is more convenient; for Zakarpattia, Solotvyno or Diakove.
What if the body has already been cremated?
Then we bring the urn with the ashes home. Transporting it costs from €700. At the Ukrainian border an urn needs the same documents as a coffin. How we transport an urn is described on the page “Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine”.
