Repatriation of the deceased from Montenegro to Ukraine

from €3,900 including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. We will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

Summary. Repatriating the deceased from Montenegro to Ukraine costs from €3,900 for the whole journey: documents, the coffin and transport to your town; the funeral in Ukraine is extra. Montenegro does not border Ukraine, so the road is longer: we go by our vehicle in transit to the Ukrainian border or with an air leg (from 2.5 hours). The death certificate is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the body is placed in a metal, hermetically sealed coffin. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Call us and within 5 minutes you will have the exact price.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

What we do when you call

The person may have gone to the coast on holiday, or may have been working there. However it happened, the steps are the same. In Montenegro we handle everything ourselves, and XREQUIEM runs the whole case for you.

  1. We listen and give you the price

We ask in which town the death happened, where the body is now and which documents you already have. We tell you at once what the journey to your town will cost.

  2. We arrange collection with the hospital

Morgues in Montenegro are attached to hospitals. We contact the hospital ourselves and agree when the deceased can be collected.

  3. We obtain the death certificate

It is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro. With it we also obtain an extract from the death register.

  4. We arrange the permit to transport the body

We submit an application stating the border crossing point and the country of destination, Ukraine. We attach an identity document, the extract from the death register and a confirmation of death. If a separate decision and an accompanying letter are needed, we obtain those too.

  5. We prepare the body and the coffin

The body is placed in a hermetic metal coffin, which is sealed. The Ukrainian border requires this.

  6. We handle the Ukrainian side

We translate and certify the documents and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Podgorica. The Embassy registers the death and certifies the papers for the border.

  7. We bring the deceased home

We travel by road, or part of the way by plane, and hand the deceased over to the family in your town. We can also arrange the funeral anywhere in Ukraine if you ask.

Documents in Montenegro

Here is what is issued locally and what we do. Some papers are not needed in every case; we will tell you which ones you will need.

What Montenegro issues

  • Death certificate: issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro.
  • Izvod iz knjige umrlih: an extract from the death register. It is attached to the transport application.
  • Confirmation of death: it also goes with the application, together with an identity document.
  • Rješenje: the decision that permits the transport. It is issued in a number of cases, for example when the death was caused by an infectious disease.
  • Sprovodnica: an accompanying letter for the body, something like a “body passport”. It is signed by a sanitary inspector. It is needed in the same cases as the decision.

When the body is embalmed, the package usually also includes an embalming certificate, certificates from the Ministry of Health that the deceased had no quarantine or infectious disease, and our certificate that the coffin is hermetic.

What we take on

  • We collect the documents from the hospital and the relevant offices.
  • We submit the transport application and, when a decision and an accompanying letter are needed, we obtain those too.
  • We translate everything into Ukrainian and certify it.
  • We submit the documents to the Embassy of Ukraine on the family's behalf.
  • We prepare the declaration and the package for customs at the Ukrainian border.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it if the original is now with the hospital or the police.
  • Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.

A separate Montenegrin regulation (pravilnik) of 2020 describes how to transport a body after death from an infectious disease and how to rebury a body, including abroad. It also sets out the form of the accompanying letter. You do not need to work through it: we know what to submit and where. The general list of papers is in the Documents section.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Montenegro

Ukraine has one mission in Montenegro: the Embassy in Podgorica. The Embassy has an emergency line for cases when a Ukrainian citizen dies.

  • The consul registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen abroad. For this the consul needs the medical document confirming the death and a certificate from the Montenegrin authorities.
  • Foreign documents submitted to the consul must be certified and translated into Ukrainian.
  • The consul registers the death and issues the first death certificate without a consular fee.
  • The consul also issues a certificate for the social protection authorities, which the family needs to claim the funeral allowance.
  • The certificate that the body and the coffin contain no prohibited items is issued by an authority of the country where the death occurred, and the Ukrainian consulate certifies it. Without it, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.

We prepare the documents for the Embassy, so in most cases you do not need to go to Podgorica. You can read more about the consul's role in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.

How we bring the deceased home from Montenegro

Montenegro shares no border with Ukraine, so the journey passes through other countries. We choose the route for your case: the town, the timing and the family's wishes.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Podgorica, Budva, Kotor, Bar, Herceg Novi, Tivat and from any other Montenegrin town or village: from a hospital morgue or from another place where the deceased is. Tell us where the body is now, and we will agree on the day of collection.

By road

Our specialist vehicle collects the coffin in Montenegro and drives it through the countries on the way to the Ukrainian border, and then on to your town. We choose the border crossing together with the route.

Plane and road

For a flight, the body is placed in a hermetic metal box with a valve filter, and the box goes into a wooden coffin. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine: the plane flies to an airport near Ukraine, and the journey continues by road. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours.

How long it takes

The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. What usually takes longest is the documents, so we submit them in parallel.

At the Ukrainian border, the body must be in a hermetic metal coffin, which is sealed. Customs clearance is based on a written declaration with the documents. We prepare the declaration and the documents. You can read more on the pages Road transport and Air transport.

Questions about repatriation from Montenegro

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Montenegro?

From €3,900 for the whole journey home: documents, preparing the body, the transport coffin, transport and the border. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. The exact amount depends on the towns and the type of transport. What the price is made up of is explained in the article How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad, and all prices are on the Prices page.

How long does it take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. If part of the journey is by plane, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. What usually takes longest is the papers: the death certificate, the transport permit and the Embassy. So we submit everything in parallel.

We were on holiday. Does someone need to stay in Montenegro?

In most cases, no. You can go home: we handle the case in Montenegro ourselves and keep you updated by phone or on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If an office asks for a relative's signature in person, we will tell you in advance.

Which documents do you need from the family?

Usually the deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document confirming the family relationship and a power of attorney for us. We arrange the rest: the death certificate, the extract, the permit, the accompanying letter, the translations and the Embassy documents.

Is embalming compulsory?

Not always. It is compulsory when a body is taken across the ocean. For the journey to Ukraine it depends on the route and the carrier: some airlines accept only embalmed bodies. In Montenegro embalming is done only at the Clinical Centre in Podgorica, and it is best done within 72 hours. So we settle the question of embalming on the very first day. You can read more about preparing the body.

What kind of coffin is needed?

For the Ukrainian border: a hermetic metal coffin, which is sealed. For a flight, the Montenegrin regulation describes a hermetic metal box with a valve filter inside a wooden coffin. We prepare a coffin that suits both countries. The kinds of coffin are described on the Coffins page.

The person had travel insurance. Will it cover the transport?

It may. Send us a photo of the policy: we will check the terms and deal with the insurer ourselves. Do not hire a local funeral home yourself without first agreeing it with the insurer, because you may lose the compensation. Often a policy pays only as far as the border; we will tell you in advance what it does not cover. You can read more in the article on insurance.

Which towns in Montenegro do you collect from?

From any town in Montenegro: Podgorica, the resort towns on the coast and smaller settlements. Tell us the town and the hospital, and we will tell you when we can collect the deceased.

What should I do first?

The first steps are at the top of this page, and there is more detail on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad. Do not pay anyone in Montenegro until you know the full price of bringing the deceased home.

Can you bring home an urn with ashes?

Yes. Bringing home an urn costs from €700. At the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items, certified by the consulate. How we transport an urn is described on the page Transport of an urn with ashes.
