from €3,000 including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. We will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.
Summary. The price of bringing the deceased home from France is from €3,000: it covers the documents, the coffin and the road to your town, while the funeral in Ukraine is a separate service. In France removal of the body goes through the mairie, the prefecture and the consulate of Ukraine: the mairie draws up the death certificate, the prefect of the département permits removal, and the consular section of the Embassy issues the certificate for transporting the coffin. We go by road through Europe or with an air leg (from 2.5 hours). The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Tell us the city and the address and we will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

What we do when you call
In France, taking a body out of the country goes through three authorities: the town hall, the prefecture and the Ukrainian consulate. Under French rules a licensed funeral home carries out these steps, and the Ukrainian consulate requires a funeral home licensed in France. You will not need to look for anyone, as we take responsibility for every stage. Transport is carried out under the law of this country. We check each step and see the whole matter through to the end.
We listen and give you the price
We ask in which city the death occurred, where the deceased is now and whether you already have any documents. We tell you the price straight away.
The death certificate
After the death is declared, the town hall (mairie) draws up the death certificate, the acte de décès.
Apostille and translation
For use in Ukraine, the certificate needs an apostille and a translation into Ukrainian. The Embassy of Ukraine can also do the translation.
Closing the coffin
For a flight the coffin must be hermetic, with a metal casing. Once the coffin is closed, we file a declaration of transport with the town hall.
The prefect's permit
The permit to take the body out of France is issued by the prefect of the département where the coffin was closed.
The consulate's certificate
The consular section of the Embassy of Ukraine issues the certificate for transporting the coffin.
The journey home
By road across Europe, or with an air leg. We hand the deceased over to the family in Ukraine.

Documents in France
French documents
- Acte de décès: the death certificate. The town hall (mairie) draws it up after the death is declared.
- The declaration of transport of the body: filed after the coffin is closed, with the town hall of the place where it was closed.
- The prefect's permit to take the body out of France: issued by the prefect of the département where the coffin was closed.
- A certificate that the coffin has been closed and a certificate that the deceased had no infectious disease.
For the Ukrainian consulate
To issue the certificate for transporting the coffin, the consular section of the Embassy needs:
- the death certificate with an apostille and a translation into Ukrainian;
- the certificate that the coffin has been closed and the certificate that the deceased had no infectious disease;
- the prefecture's permit to take the body out;
- copies of the passports of the applicant and of the deceased;
- a document showing the family relationship.
The documents are submitted by the next of kin or by us under a power of attorney.
What we need from you
- A copy of the deceased's passport and of your passport.
- A document showing that you are a relative: a birth certificate, a marriage certificate and so on.
- Your consent for us to act on behalf of the family. We collect the other documents ourselves.
For what to do in the first hours, see “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”. The general list of papers is in the “Documents” section.
The Embassy of Ukraine in France
The Embassy of Ukraine in the French Republic is in Paris, on avenue de Saxe. There are honorary consulates in Bordeaux and Lille, and since 9 July 2026 there is also a Consulate General in Lyon, which provides all consular services and whose district covers Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Corsica.
The consular section of the Embassy has a 24/7 hotline. It is meant only for emergencies, and the death of a loved one is one of them. Call us and we will give you the hotline number.
What the consular section does:
- Issues the certificate for transporting a coffin or an urn to Ukraine.
- Can translate the French death certificate into Ukrainian if the body or the ashes are being taken to Ukraine.
- Registers the death of a citizen of Ukraine and issues the first death certificate without a consular fee.
- Issues a certificate for claiming the funeral allowance in Ukraine.
How we bring the deceased home from France
France is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses. Ukraine is not. So, besides the French documents, the Ukrainian border requires the death certificate and a certificate that the coffin contains no prohibited items, legalised by the Ukrainian consulate.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Lille and from any other French town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. The region of France affects the amount: Strasbourg is closer to the Ukrainian border than Brittany or Nice.
By road
Our vehicle collects the coffin in France and takes it across Europe to your town. France is far from Ukraine, so the journey is long, especially from the south and the west of the country.
Plane and road
From Bordeaux, Marseille or Nice a flight can shorten the journey noticeably. For a flight, French law requires a hermetic coffin with a metal casing. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine: the plane flies to an airport near Ukraine (Warsaw, Rzeszów or Chișinău). The air leg takes from 2.5 hours, then the journey continues by road.
Timing
The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. How long it takes depends on the town hall and the prefecture: until the prefect's permit is issued, the body cannot be taken out of France.
At the Ukrainian border the body must be in a hermetic metal coffin, and the coffin is sealed. Customs clearance is done on a written declaration, which we prepare. More on the pages “Air transport” and “Road transport”.
Price of repatriation from France
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with the hospital and the morgue
- local, consular and border documents
- preparing the body for the journey
- hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
- sealing as the border requires
- transport by road, or part of the way by air, whichever is faster and better value for you
- handover to the family in your town
Farewell coffin: quoted separately.
The “from” price covers the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service. The final amount depends on the region of France (Strasbourg and Bordeaux are very different distances from the Ukrainian border), on the type of transport and on the coffin. Questions about repatriation from France
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from France?
From €3,000 for the whole journey home: French documents, the prefect's permit, the consulate's certificate, preparing the body, the coffin for transport, the journey itself and the border crossing. A funeral in Ukraine is paid separately.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. If part of the journey is by plane, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The longest wait is usually for the prefect's permit and the consulate's certificate. We prepare the documents in parallel.
Who issues the permit to take the body out of France?
The prefect of the département where the coffin was closed. This is set by French law. We file the application, so the family does not need to go to the prefecture.
Can we manage without a funeral home?
No. Under French rules a funeral home handles the steps for transporting a body, and the Ukrainian consulate requires the transport of a coffin or an urn to be handled by a funeral home licensed in France. Even so, you deal with one team and one phone number from beginning to end.
Which documents do you need from the family?
A copy of the deceased's passport, a copy of your passport and a document showing the family relationship. We prepare the local documents and handle the rest.
Do I need to travel to France?
Usually not. A relative, or we under a power of attorney, can submit the documents to the consular section. Your part is to provide the documents showing the family relationship and your consent. If we need anything from you in person, we will tell you in advance. What you can do from home is in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
What coffin is needed? Is embalming required?
For transport by air, France requires a hermetic coffin with a metal casing. At the Ukrainian border the body must be in a hermetic metal coffin that is sealed. Whether embalming is needed depends on the route and the carrier's requirements. Preparing the body is already included in the price. If embalming turns out to be needed, we will tell you in advance whether the price changes. More in “Preparing the body”.
The deceased had an insurance policy. What should I do?
Send us a photo of the policy first. We will read the terms and agree the transport with the insurer ourselves, so that the compensation is not lost. A policy often pays only as far as the border, and we will say in advance what is left for you to cover.
Which cities in France do you collect from?
From any city in France: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Only the distance and the price depend on the region.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes. For an urn the consulate issues a separate certificate. Instead of the certificate that the coffin has been closed, the package includes a cremation certificate. Bringing home an urn costs from €500. More in “Transport of an urn with ashes”.
