How we work with Lithuania
You call us once. From then on we deal with the Lithuanian services, the embassy and customs ourselves, and we tell you what has been done. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German, so you or the hospital can call us in English.
The first conversation
We ask which city the body is in now and what is already known. We tell you the exact price straight away.
The medical certificate of death
Without the Lithuanian medical certificate of death (medicininis mirties liudijimas), the body cannot be accepted for processing. We check that it has already been issued.
The coffin
Before departure we prepare a hermetically sealed coffin with a soldered zinc liner and put it under official seal, as the Ukrainian side requires.
The Lithuanian sanitary service
We notify the National Public Health Centre (NVSC) that the body is leaving for Ukraine.
The Embassy of Ukraine
Registration of the death with the consul, translations and the certificate for the Ukrainian border.
The road
In a specialist vehicle through Poland to the Ukrainian border.
Home
We hand the deceased over to the family in your town. We can also arrange the funeral anywhere in Ukraine.
We work out your price
Call or leave your number.
Documents in Lithuania
What Lithuania issues
- Medicininis mirties liudijimas: the medical certificate of death. Only after it is the body accepted for processing.
- The death certificate from the Lithuanian authorities: the Ukrainian consul needs it to register the death. We obtain it.
- Mirusiojo kūno laissez-passer: the body passport that the NVSC issues for transport to countries that are parties to the Strasbourg Agreement. For Ukraine, a notification is submitted instead; we explain it below.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport or a scan of it. We take the details from it for the NVSC notification and for the translations for the embassy.
- Your passport and a document showing you are a relative. The consul in Vilnius needs to know which relative is applying.
- The name of the hospital or morgue that issued the medical certificate, or the police contact, if the police have already been in touch.
You can send scans on Viber or Telegram. We deal with the local offices, so you do not need to speak the language. The full list is on the “Documents” page.
The body passport or a notification
Lithuania is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement, and Ukraine is not. So for transport to Ukraine a separate notification is sent to the Lithuanian sanitary service (NVSC). We do this.
The Ukrainian border needs its own documents in every case: the death certificate, the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin, certified by the Embassy of Ukraine, and a hermetic metal coffin. We prepare both parts together.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Lithuania
Ukraine has only one mission in Lithuania: the Embassy in Vilnius. Its consular section is at a separate address. The section has a hotline, which takes calls only when a Ukrainian citizen's life is at risk or a Ukrainian citizen has died.
- The consul registers the death of a citizen of Ukraine on the basis of the Lithuanian medical document and the death certificate. The documents must be translated into Ukrainian and certified.
- There is no consular fee for registering the death or for the first Ukrainian certificate.
- The consul also issues a certificate for the social protection authorities, which the family needs to claim the funeral allowance.
- The certificate of no prohibited items has to be certified by the embassy. Without it, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.
If you have already called the consular section's hotline, that was the right step. Now call us and we will take it from there. All the first steps are on the page “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”.
How we bring the deceased home from Lithuania
Lithuania has no common border with Ukraine. So we travel in transit through Poland, in a specialist vehicle. We enter Ukraine through one of the crossing points on the Polish-Ukrainian border, the one closest to your town. The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. More about road transport.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys and from any other Lithuanian town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or from another place where the deceased is. The road from Klaipėda is longer than from Kaunas or Vilnius, but we work out the route and the price for your particular town.
A plane is also possible. We explain how it works on the page “Air transport”. From Lithuania the road is often simpler: the deceased is not reloaded, and you know where they are at every stage of the journey.
The coffin
The body is taken in a hermetically sealed coffin with a soldered zinc liner, under official seal, as Ukrainian customs require. Besides the coffin, the border needs the certificate of no prohibited items, certified by the Embassy of Ukraine. We choose a coffin that will be accepted at the border the first time. The options are on the page “Coffins and sealed metal liners”.
Embalming
Whether embalming is needed depends on the condition of the body, the length of the journey and the carrier's rules. We will tell you in advance and explain why.
Price of repatriation from Lithuania
The price covers the whole journey home, including the transit through Poland. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service.
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with the hospital and the morgue
- local, consular and border documents
- preparing the body for the journey
- hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
- sealing as the border requires
- usually by road; if needed, part of the way by air
- handover to the family in your town
Farewell coffin: quoted separately.
What the exact price depends on
It depends on the city in Lithuania (from Klaipėda the road is longer than from Kaunas or Vilnius), on the town in Ukraine, on the coffin and the preparation of the body, and on the number of translations. Tell us both cities and we will work out the price straight away. Other countries are on the Prices page.
Call us, day or night

Questions about repatriation from Lithuania
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Lithuania?
From €1,300, including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. What the price consists of is explained in the article “How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad”.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. How long the paperwork takes depends on the day of the week, public holidays and the translations for the embassy in Vilnius. We prepare the NVSC notification and the documents for the consul in parallel, not one after the other.
Is a body passport (laissez-passer) needed for Ukraine?
No. Lithuania is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement and Ukraine is not, so instead of the body passport a separate notification is sent to the Lithuanian sanitary service. We do this. The Ukrainian documents for the border are still needed.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport or a scan, your passport and a document showing you are a relative. The consul registers the death on the basis of the Lithuanian documents translated into Ukrainian. We do the translations and the certification.
Do I need to travel to Lithuania?
In most cases, no. We submit the notification to the NVSC. We also take the documents to the consular section in Vilnius. If the embassy asks for a relative's signature, we will explain the simplest way to give it. What you can do from home is described in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
Why not by plane?
It can be done by plane, but from Lithuania a road journey through Poland is often simpler: there is less reloading and fewer approvals. We will compare both options for you. About the plane, see the page “Air transport”.
Should I call the embassy's hotline?
Yes, that is the right step. After that, call us: we will take over the transport and the documents.
Which cities in Lithuania do you collect from?
From any: Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Alytus, Marijampolė and smaller towns and villages.
What should I do first?
The first steps are at the top of this page, and in detail on the page “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”. Do not pay for anything until you know the full price to bring the deceased home.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes. Bringing an urn home costs from €500. At the Ukrainian border an urn needs the same documents as a coffin. How we transport an urn is on the page “Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine”.
