What we do when you call
A death often happens on holiday, when the family knows neither the local rules nor the language. In Egypt we do all the work ourselves, and XREQUIEM runs the whole case.
We listen and act at once
We ask which city, hotel or hospital the body is in now, and whether there is an insurance policy. First we arrange the embalming, because there are only 24 hours for it.
Embalming and the certificate
Embalming is compulsory for taking a body out of Egypt. After it, a certificate of embalming is issued.
The death certificate
The Egyptian health authorities issue it. This is the so-called “yellow” certificate, which states the cause of death.
Burial and dispatch permits
The local sanitary authority gives a burial permit. A separate permit, the Expedition Permit, allows the body to be sent.
The Ukrainian side
We translate and certify the documents and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Cairo. There the death is registered and the papers are certified for the border.
The coffin and the seals
The coffin is lined with zinc and soldered shut. Before the flight it is placed in a wooden case. A representative of the Egyptian Ministry of Health seals everything for customs.
We take the deceased home
By air to an airport near Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town.

Documents in Egypt
To take a body out of the country, Egypt requires several documents. Here they are.
What Egypt issues
- Death certificate from the health authorities: the “yellow” one, with the cause of death. A copy is needed for transport.
- Certificate of embalming: on form A or B.
- Burial permit: from the local sanitary authority.
- Expedition Permit: the permit to send the body.
To the Egyptian documents we add what the Ukrainian border requires, including the certificate of no prohibited items, certified by the consulate.
What we take on
- We arrange the embalming in the first hours ourselves.
- We obtain the death certificate, the certificates and both permits.
- We translate the documents into Ukrainian, certify them and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine.
- We book the air transport and see the coffin through sealing.
- We draw up the customs statement and the papers for the Ukrainian border.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
- A photo of the insurance policy, if there is one.
- A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.
The general list of papers is on the Documents page. What to do in the first hours is on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Egypt
Ukraine's only mission in Egypt is the Embassy in Cairo, in the Maadi district. It has an emergency line for cases when a citizen of Ukraine dies.
- The death of a citizen of Ukraine abroad is registered by the consul, on the basis of the medical document on the death and a certificate from the authorities of the country.
- For the consul, the Egyptian documents must be certified and translated into Ukrainian.
- The consul charges no consular fee for registering the death or for the first death certificate.
- The consul gives a certificate for the social protection authorities, on the basis of which the funeral allowance in Ukraine is arranged.
- The certificate that there are no prohibited items in the body or the coffin is issued by an authority of the country of death, and the Ukrainian consulate certifies it. Without it, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.
In most cases you do not need to travel to Cairo: we prepare the documents for the Embassy. More in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Egypt
The journey from Egypt includes a flight: by air to an airport near Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle to your town.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Alexandria, Luxor, Marsa Alam and from any other Egyptian town or resort: from a hospital or from any other place where the body is. Name the hotel or the hospital where the body is now: it decides which airport the flight leaves from.
Plane to an airport near Ukraine
Airlines carry the coffin in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.
Our vehicle to your home
At the airport the coffin is met by our specialist vehicle, which takes it across the border to your town in Ukraine.
How long it takes
The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the time goes on the Egyptian permits and booking the flight.
The coffin for leaving Egypt
Egypt's requirements for the coffin are these: it is lined with zinc and soldered shut, and the outside is hardwood. For the flight it goes into a wooden case as well, and a representative of the Ministry of Health seals the coffin and the case. The Ukrainian border requires a hermetic metal coffin under official seal, and a coffin like this meets that requirement. More on the Air transport and Coffins pages.
How much it costs to bring the deceased home from Egypt
We work out the price for Egypt for your case. It covers the whole journey of the body home, air leg included. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service, priced separately.
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with the hospital and the morgue
- local, consular and border documents
- preparing the body for the journey
- hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
- sealing as the border requires

What can change the price
The city in Egypt and the departure airport. The airline's fare on the date of travel. The destination in Ukraine. Whether insurance covers part of the costs. We clarify all of this in the first conversation and give you the price straight away. Prices for other countries are on the Prices page.

Questions about repatriation from Egypt
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Egypt?
We work out the price for Egypt individually. It depends on the city, the flight and what insurance covers. Call us or send a request and we will give you the price for the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is priced separately.
Why must we hurry?
In Egypt a body must be embalmed no later than 24 hours after death. Under local law an unembalmed body is buried within 24 hours. This requirement can be postponed, for example while waiting for a decision from relatives abroad, and we will arrange the delay. So if you want the person to be buried in Ukraine, call us at once. We are available around the clock.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the time goes on the Egyptian permits, the Embassy and booking the flight. We run them in parallel.
The person was on a package tour. Who pays for the transport?
By law the tour company must insure the tourist: medical insurance and accident insurance. Send us a photo of the policy and we will talk to the insurer ourselves. Do not agree anything with a local funeral home until the insurer has approved it, or the compensation may not be paid. If the policy covers only part of the journey, we will tell you the remaining amount in advance. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home.
Is embalming compulsory?
Yes, for taking a body out of Egypt it is compulsory. The documents for taking the body out of the country also include a certificate of embalming from the health authorities. More about preparing the body.
What kind of coffin is needed?
One lined with zinc and soldered shut, with hardwood on the outside and, for the flight, a wooden case around it. A representative of the Egyptian Ministry of Health seals it. This coffin also meets the requirements of the Ukrainian border.
We were on holiday in Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh. Who do we contact?
Ukraine has only one mission in Egypt: the Embassy in Cairo. You do not have to go there yourselves. We prepare the documents for the Embassy, and you can go home.
Which documents do you need from the family?
Usually the deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document showing that you are related, a power of attorney for us and a photo of the insurance policy, if there is one. We take care of the Egyptian documents, the translations and the Embassy.
What should I do first?
The first steps are at the start of this page, and the details are on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad. Do not sign anything with a local funeral home without talking to us first, and do not pay anything until you know the full price of getting the deceased home.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home?
Yes, if the ashes are already available. Transporting an urn costs from €700. For the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate. More on the Urn transport page.
