Repatriation of the deceased from Portugal to Ukraine

from €4,800 including documents, the coffin, the flight and the road to your town. We will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

Summary. The price of bringing the deceased home from Portugal is from €4,800: it covers the documents, the coffin and the road to your town, while the funeral in Ukraine is a separate service. Portugal is one of the farthest destinations, so we more often choose a plane with a connection (air leg from 2.5 hours) and then a road leg; overland the route runs through Spain, France, Germany and Poland. First the death must be registered, and only then do the police issue the body passport (livre-trânsito). The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Tell us the city and the address and we will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

What we do when you call

In Portugal the order is fixed: the death is registered first, and only then can the deceased be placed in the coffin for transport. No step can be skipped, so we take them one by one, without pauses. We organise and run the steps in Portugal. XREQUIEM manages the whole case for you, from the first call until the deceased is handed over to the family. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German.

  1. We answer your call at any hour

We ask which city the deceased is in now and which documents you already have. We give you the price straight away.

  2. We register the death

At the civil registry office (conservatória do registo civil). Outside its opening hours, at weekends and on public holidays, the death bulletin is issued by the police.

  3. We obtain the death certificate

The carrier must have it with them the whole time the coffin is on the road.

  4. We obtain the “body passport”

In Portuguese it is called livre-trânsito. It is issued by the police.

  5. We prepare the Ukrainian side

Translations, certification, the certificate of no prohibited items and the documents for the Ukrainian embassy or consulate.

  6. We prepare the deceased and the zinc-lined coffin

For the flight, the coffin is also placed in rigid packaging.

  7. We bring the deceased home and hand them over to the family

By air with a connection, then by road to your town.

Documents in Portugal

There are only a few Portuguese documents, but the order matters: until the death is registered, the next papers will not be issued. Below is who issues what.

What Portugal issues

  • Assento de óbito: the death record, drawn up at the civil registry office (conservatória do registo civil). Outside the opening hours of the conservatória, at weekends and on public holidays, the police issue the death bulletin (boletim de óbito).
  • Certificado de óbito: the death certificate. The person transporting the coffin must carry it, or a copy of the death registration document.
  • Livre-trânsito: the “body passport” for taking the deceased out of Portugal. It is issued by the police: the GNR (National Republican Guard) or the PSP (Public Security Police).

What we take on

  • We register the death ourselves and obtain the livre-trânsito.
  • We have the Portuguese documents translated into Ukrainian and certified.
  • We submit the documents to the Ukrainian embassy or consulate on the family's behalf.
  • We put together everything Ukrainian border customs will ask for.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
  • Your passport and a document proving that you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will explain how to arrange it from a distance.

Portugal is a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses. Under it, the body travels with a special document: the same livre-trânsito. Ukraine is not a party to the Agreement, so we prepare the Ukrainian documents separately. The general list of papers for Ukraine is on the Documents page.

The Embassy and consulate of Ukraine in Portugal

Ukraine has two missions in Portugal: the Embassy in Lisbon and the Consulate in Porto. We choose which one to approach according to where the death occurred.

  • The death of a citizen of Ukraine abroad is registered by the consul. This needs a medical document and a death certificate from the Portuguese authorities, translated into Ukrainian and certified.
  • No consular fee is charged for registering the death or for the first death certificate.
  • For the social protection authorities the consul provides a certificate, which the family needs to claim the funeral allowance.
  • The certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin is issued by the Portuguese side, and the consulate legalises it. Without it, the body cannot cross the Ukrainian border.

A foreign death certificate is recognised in Ukraine only with an apostille or legalisation. We take care of this in advance. More on the What to do if a loved one dies abroad page.

How we bring the deceased home from Portugal

From Portugal to the Ukrainian border, the road crosses the whole of Europe. That is why, from Portugal, we more often choose a flight. We go by road all the way if the family decides so.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Coimbra, Setúbal, Braga and from any other Portuguese town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Name the town, and we will tell you the route and the amount.

Flight plus road

Usually we fly with a connection to an airport near Ukraine, and from there we drive to your town. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours.

By road

By road the route runs through Spain, France, Germany and Poland to the Ukrainian border. It is long, but possible if the family would rather have it that way.

How long it takes

The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. The time before departure depends on the documents.

What coffin is needed

Under Portuguese rules, the body is placed in a zinc-lined coffin no earlier than 24 hours after death, and only after the death has been registered. For transport by air or by sea, the coffin is put in rigid packaging marked “Handle with care” (MANUSEAR COM PRECAUÇÃO). The Ukrainian border also requires a hermetic metal coffin, which is officially sealed, so one coffin meets the requirements on both sides. Customs clearance is made on a written application with supporting documents, and we prepare them. More on the Air transport page.

The “from” price covers the whole journey of the deceased home. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service and is not included in this price.

What can change the price

The city in Portugal and the distance to the airport. A flight, or the whole journey by road. The coffin model. Where in Ukraine we are going. We take all of this into account when we give you the amount. You can compare with other countries on the Prices page.

Questions about repatriation from Portugal

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Portugal?

From €4,800. It is a long-distance route, and the amount already includes registration of the death, the livre-trânsito, the Ukrainian documents, the zinc-lined coffin, the flight and the road from the airport home. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. The final amount depends on the city in Portugal, the type of transport and the town in Ukraine.

How long does it take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. Documents usually take the longest, so where possible we prepare the Portuguese and the Ukrainian papers in parallel.

Why can the deceased not be placed in the coffin straight away?

The Portuguese rules require this: the death is registered first, and then a minimum period after death must pass. The details are in the section “What coffin is needed” above. We make sure these steps run without delays.

What is the Portuguese “body passport”?

It is called livre-trânsito. It is the document that lets the body cross borders. It is issued by the police, the GNR or the PSP. We obtain it ourselves.

The Embassy or the Consulate: which one should we apply to?

Ukraine has an Embassy in Lisbon and a Consulate in Porto. Which of the two takes the papers depends on where the death occurred. We submit the documents ourselves, so you do not need to travel.

Which documents do you need from the family?

Registration of the death at the conservatória and the livre-trânsito are handled by us, so you do not need to go there. From the family we need the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, a document proving that you are a relative, and a power of attorney for us. If you also live in Portugal, the power of attorney can be arranged there. If you are in Ukraine, we will explain how to do it from there.

Is embalming compulsory?

The Portuguese law on transport of bodies has no separate requirement for embalming. But some airlines accept only embalmed bodies, so we decide depending on the carrier. Preparing the body is already in the price. If embalming turns out to be needed, we will tell you in advance. More on the Preparing the body page, and on coffins in the article Coffin and embalming for bringing a body to Ukraine.

The deceased had insurance. What should I do?

Before you agree to an offer from a funeral home or a hospital in Portugal, send us a photo of the policy. The insurer usually has to approve the costs in advance, otherwise the compensation can be lost. Over such a distance a policy often covers only the flight to an airport near Ukraine, so we will calculate the road from there separately and tell you at once.

Which cities in Portugal do you collect from?

From any town or village in Portugal: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Tell us the city, and we will collect the deceased once the death has been registered.

Can an urn with ashes be brought home?

Yes. An urn is brought into Ukraine with the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items legalised by the consulate. We agree the carriage of an urn on board an aircraft with the airline in advance. Transport of an urn costs from €700. More on the Transport of an urn with ashes page.
