Summary. Repatriating the deceased from Hungary to Ukraine costs from €1,900 for the whole journey: documents, the coffin and transport to your town; the funeral in Ukraine is extra. Hungary borders Ukraine, so we go overland by vehicle through one of six road border crossings. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Call us and within 5 minutes you will have the exact price.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

How we handle your case in Hungary

Hungary works to its own deadlines. The papers to register a death must be filed within 5 days, and without a separate permit the body cannot be taken out of the country. So we start as soon as you call. We prepare the Hungarian papers and the coffin. We follow every step and keep you informed until the deceased is home. If the hospital asks who will collect the deceased, give them our number, +380 77 882 77 77. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German. If you cannot call, write to us on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram and we will call you back.

  1. We listen and give you the price

We ask in which city the death happened, where the deceased is now and which documents you already have. We tell you straight away how much it will cost.

  2. We make arrangements with the hospital or the morgue

You do not need to speak Hungarian or find out whom to call. We deal with the hospital, the morgue or the police.

  3. We register the death

A doctor examines the body and writes the medical certificate of death (halottvizsgálati bizonyítvány). We then have 5 days to submit the deceased's documents to the registrar. After that, an extract from the death register is issued.

  4. We obtain the transport permit

It is issued by the district office at the place of death. The application states where the body is taken from and to, by what transport and who goes with it. The permit sets out the conditions of transport, and these are checked before departure.

  5. We prepare the body and the coffin

For transport abroad, Hungarian rules require an inner metal coffin. Ukraine, too, accepts the deceased only in a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. We prepare a coffin that meets both the Hungarian and the Ukrainian requirements.

  6. We handle the Ukrainian side

Translations, certification, the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin, and the documents for the consulate. We do this in parallel with the Hungarian steps, so no days are lost.

  7. We bring the deceased home

In a specialist vehicle across the Hungarian-Ukrainian border to your town: to your home, to a church or to a farewell hall.

Documents in Hungary

There are only a few Hungarian documents, but each comes from a different office. Here is what each one is and who issues it.

What Hungary issues

  • Halottvizsgálati bizonyítvány: the medical certificate of death, written by a doctor after examining the body. It is attached to the transport permit.
  • Halotti anyakönyvi kivonat: the extract from the death register. It is issued by the civil registrar (anyakönyvvezető).
  • Halottszállítási engedély: the permit to transport the body. It is issued by the district office (járási hivatal), which acts here as the public health authority.

What we take on

  • We submit the documents to the registrar on time.
  • We prepare the application for the permit and check that its conditions are met before departure.
  • We arrange for the documents to be certified and translated into Ukrainian.
  • We prepare everything for the consulate and for customs at the Ukrainian border.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it if the original is with the hospital or the police.
  • Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.

Good to know in advance

When the death is registered, the registrar marks the deceased's visa or permit in the passport as “érvénytelen” (“invalid”) and returns the documents. You will need the passport later, so do not throw it away or give it to anyone you do not know.

Hungary is not a party to the international agreements on transporting bodies: neither the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement nor the 1937 Berlin Agreement. So there is no international body passport here. Its role is played by the Hungarian permit to transport the body.

The general list of documents is on the Documents page.

The Embassy and consulate of Ukraine in Hungary

The Embassy of Ukraine is in Budapest and has a consular section. There is one more Ukrainian consulate, in Nyíregyháza.

  • The consul registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen abroad. This can be done at the place of death, the place of residence, the place where the body was found or the place of burial.
  • The Hungarian documents must be certified and translated into Ukrainian for the consul. We take care of this.
  • The consul registers the death and issues the first death certificate without a consular fee.
  • The consul also issues a certificate for the social protection authorities, which the family needs to claim the funeral allowance.
  • The consulate certifies the document confirming that the body and the coffin contain no prohibited items. Without it, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.

What to do in the first hours is on the What to do if a loved one dies abroad page.

How we bring the deceased home from Hungary

By road only, in a specialist vehicle, straight across the Hungarian-Ukrainian border. No plane is needed. The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. The actual time depends on how quickly the documents are issued and on the queue at the border. More about road transport.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Budapest, Debrecen, Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Pécs, Székesfehérvár and from any other Hungarian town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or from another place where the deceased is. The district administration at the place of death issues the permit, so please name the town at once.

There are 6 road border crossings between Ukraine and Hungary. We choose the one that suits your route best.

The coffin and embalming

To move a body outside a town or village, Hungarian rules require a strong, watertight coffin with a lid. For transport abroad, an inner metal coffin is also required. At the Ukrainian border the body must likewise be in a hermetic metal coffin under official seal.

Embalming is not required by law in Hungary. It is done only at the family's request, and only in a pathology department, a forensic medical institute or a post-mortem room. We will tell you honestly, and in advance, whether it is needed in your case. The coffins we offer are on the Coffins page.

How much it costs to bring the deceased home from Hungary

Body from Hungary from €1,900

This sum is for the whole way home. A funeral in Ukraine is not included and is priced separately.

What can change the price

Four things can change it: the distance from the city in Hungary to the border and on to your town; the coffin you choose; whether the family wants embalming; and how many documents you already have and how many we must prepare from scratch. Questions about repatriation from Hungary

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Hungary?

From €1,900 for the whole journey home: documents, preparing the body, the coffin for transport, the vehicle and customs formalities. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. The exact amount depends on the city in Hungary and the town in Ukraine. Call us and we will give it to you straight away.

How long does it take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. The longest wait is usually for the documents: the death registration and the transport permit. We run the Hungarian and Ukrainian papers in parallel.

What should I do first?

The first steps are at the top of this page, and the details are on the What to do if a loved one dies abroad page. Do not pay anyone until you know the full cost of getting the deceased home.

Do I need to travel to Hungary?

In most cases, no. We submit the documents to the registrar. If an office asks for a relative's personal signature, we will tell you in advance. What can be done from home is covered in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.

Which documents do you need from the family?

The deceased's passport (or a photo of it while the original is with the hospital or the police), your passport, a document showing the family relationship and a power of attorney for us. We take care of the rest: the doctor's certificate, the death register extract, the transport permit, the translations and the documents for the consulate.

What kind of coffin is needed? Is embalming compulsory?

Hungary wants an inner metal coffin for transport abroad. At the Ukrainian border the body must be in a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. Such a coffin is already included in the price. Embalming is not required in Hungary. If the family asks for it, it can be done only at a pathology department, a forensic medical institute or a post-mortem room. We will advise what is right in your case. More on the Preparing the body page.

The registrar wrote “érvénytelen” in the passport. Is that normal?

Yes. It means that the deceased's visa or permit is no longer valid. The registrar adds this mark when registering the death of a foreign national and returns the documents. Keep the passport safe, because you will need it later.

The deceased had insurance. What should I do?

Do not make arrangements with a local funeral home on your own until you have agreed them with the insurer, or you may lose the compensation. Send us a photo of the policy. We will look at the terms and deal with the insurer. Often a policy pays only for the journey as far as the border. We will tell you about the rest in advance.

Which cities in Hungary do you collect from?

From any town or village in Hungary: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Tell us the address and we will tell you when we can collect the deceased.

Can you bring an urn with ashes?

Yes, if the deceased has already been cremated. At the border the urn needs the death certificate and the certificate of no prohibited items, the latter certified by the Ukrainian consulate. Urn transport costs from €700. More on the Urn transport page.
