Repatriation of the deceased from Croatia to Ukraine
from €3,000 including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. We will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.
Summary. Bringing the deceased home from Croatia to Ukraine costs from €3,000 for the entire journey: the paperwork, the coffin and the road to your town. The funeral in Ukraine is extra. A travel permit for the body, the sprovodnica, is usually required; the sanitary inspector issues it and we file the application. Croatia is closer to Ukraine than most Western European countries, so we can often do without a flight; from an island the body is first taken to the mainland. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Tell us the city and the address and we will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

How we help
For some Ukrainians Croatia is a place of work, for others it is the sea and a holiday. When a death happens there, the family has to deal with the Croatian language, a hospital, a sanitary inspector and the Ukrainian embassy all at once. We take this part on and keep you informed about every step.
The first call
We find out where the death occurred and where the deceased is now. We tell you what to do first and give you the price.
Contact with the Croatian side
We speak to the hospital and the morgue. We agree how the deceased will be kept until departure.
Croatian documents
The death certificate and, as a rule, the sprovodnica, an accompanying travel document from the sanitary inspector.
The Embassy in Zagreb
We take the Croatian certificate of no prohibited items to the Embassy for legalisation and translate the death certificate into Ukrainian.
Preparing the body
The deceased is placed in a hermetic metal coffin inside a wooden one, and the coffin is sealed. We check the requirements with the sanitary inspector and the carrier.
The journey home
By road to the Ukrainian border, or with an air leg. We hand the deceased over to the family at the place you name.

Documents in Croatia
A body leaving Croatia usually needs an accompanying travel document, the sprovodnica. The sanitary inspector issues it, and we submit the application.
What Croatia issues
- Death certificate: the Croatian document that confirms the death. A copy is attached to the transport application.
- Sprovodnica: the accompanying travel document for the deceased. It usually accompanies a body leaving Croatia for another country. The sanitary inspector at the place of death issues it, and we confirm with the inspector whether your case needs it.
We submit the application for the sprovodnica ourselves and make sure the details in it match the other documents. One mistake in a name or a date can delay the deceased at the border.
What Ukraine requires
- The Croatian death certificate, translated into Ukrainian. Without a death document the border will not let the body through.
- A certificate of no prohibited items. It is prepared by the competent Croatian authority and legalised in Zagreb by the Embassy of Ukraine.
- A hermetic metal coffin under official seal. We agree the sealing so that it is recognised both in Croatia and at the Ukrainian border.
- A written statement for customs, in free form. We write it for you; you only check it.
The exact list depends on the circumstances of the death and the place. We check it with the local offices before the documents are submitted.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Croatia
Consular matters for Ukrainians in Croatia are handled by the Embassy of Ukraine in Zagreb. Wherever the death occurred, whether in Split, in Dubrovnik or on an island, we prepare the documents for the Ukrainian side for this Embassy.
- The Embassy registers the death and issues the Ukrainian death certificate. The first death certificate is free of consular fees.
- It legalises the Croatian certificate of no prohibited items.
- It issues a certificate for the social protection authorities. With it, the family in Ukraine applies for the funeral allowance.
- It helps if an urn with ashes is being returned, and stays in touch with the family.
Before Croatian papers go to the Embassy, they are certified and translated into Ukrainian. We do this. More in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Croatia
Croatia is closer to Ukraine than most countries of Western Europe. So we can often do without a plane: the deceased travels in a specialist vehicle from our fleet through EU countries to the Ukrainian border, and then on to your town. If speed matters more, we add an air leg to an airport near the Ukrainian border. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar, Dubrovnik and from any other Croatian town, resort or island: from a hospital, a morgue or from another place where the deceased is. From an island the road is longer, so the route and the amount are worked out for your case.
Time. The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. If there is an air leg, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The exact time depends on how quickly the death certificate and the sprovodnica are issued, and on the queue at the border.
The coffin. For air transport from Croatia a hermetically sealed metal coffin inside a wooden one is usually needed. We check the exact requirements with the sanitary inspector and the carrier. Ukraine has its own rule: the metal coffin must be sealed and hermetic. We choose one that meets both requirements.
Embalming. Embalming is decided by the route and by what the carrier demands. We advise you as soon as the route is known.

Carrying ashes home from Croatia
If the body in Croatia has been cremated, we bring the urn with ashes to Ukraine from the crematorium or the place of storage. Croatia is closer to Ukraine than most of western Europe, so we often go by road. From an island the urn is first taken to the mainland.
The Croatian cremation papers are translated into Ukrainian. For the border we add the death certificate, the certificate of no prohibited items legalised by the Embassy of Ukraine in Zagreb, and a short customs statement that we write. The urn is packed so that it does not break on the way.
Bringing the urn home costs from €700. How it works is on the page “Urn transport”. The article “Customs clearance of an urn with ashes” is about customs and flights.
Price of repatriation from Croatia
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with the hospital and the morgue
- local, consular and border documents
- preparing the body for the journey
- hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
- sealing as the border requires
- usually by road; if needed, part of the way by air
- handover to the family in your town
Farewell coffin: quoted separately.
What can change the price
The “from” price covers the whole journey of the deceased home. The place affects it most: from an island the body is first taken to the mainland, and from there it goes by road or with an air leg. The town in Ukraine and the choice of coffin matter too. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service. We will tell you the exact amount during the call.

Questions about repatriation from Croatia
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Croatia?
The price is from €3,000 for the whole journey home. The list above shows what it includes. The exact amount depends on the town and the route. We will tell you during the call.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. If we choose an air leg, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The documents take more time than the road: the death certificate, the sprovodnica from the sanitary inspector and the legalisation of the certificate at the Embassy.
The person died on an island. Does that complicate things?
It makes the journey a little longer: first the body has to be taken from the island to the mainland. We arrange this ourselves. The documents are prepared in the same way: if a sprovodnica is needed, the sanitary inspector at the place of death issues it, and the Ukrainian papers come from the Embassy in Zagreb. The family's first steps are described on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.
What is a sprovodnica?
It is the accompanying travel document for the deceased. We submit the application and make sure the details in it match the other documents.
Which papers do I need to give you?
Your contact details are enough, plus the deceased's passport or a photo of it, if you have it. We prepare the application for the sprovodnica, the package for the Embassy in Zagreb and the translations. If your own signature is needed anywhere, we will say so in the first conversation.
Do I need to travel to Croatia?
Usually not. We deal with the hospital, the sanitary inspector and the Embassy, and keep in touch with you by phone and on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. When you need copies of documents, we send them via Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. What you can do from home is described in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.
Is embalming needed, and what kind of coffin?
Embalming may or may not be required, depending on the route and the carrier. For a flight a sealed metal coffin inside a wooden one is usually needed, and the Ukrainian border asks for the same hermetic seal. More in the article Coffin and embalming for bringing a body to Ukraine.
The person had travel insurance. Will it cover the transport?
It may, if the policy includes transport of the body. Send us a photo of the policy: we will look at the terms and deal with the insurer ourselves. Often a policy pays only as far as the border. We will tell you about the rest in advance.
Which towns in Croatia do you collect from?
From any town in Croatia: from Zagreb, from the coast, from the islands. The place affects only the route and the time on the road.
What if an urn with ashes has to be brought home?
We can do that. At the Ukrainian border the rules are the same as for a coffin: a death certificate, and a certificate of no prohibited items legalised at the Embassy in Zagreb. The price is from €700. More in Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine.
