What we do when you call
Liechtenstein is small, and the whole country has a single civil registry office (Zivilstandsamt), in Vaduz. The Ukrainian documents, however, are prepared in Switzerland. So in Liechtenstein itself we do the work ourselves, and XREQUIEM runs the whole case, from the first call to handing the deceased over to the family.
We listen and give you the price
We ask where the death occurred, where the body is now and which documents you already have. We tell you the cost straight away.
We obtain the death certificate
A doctor usually issues the medical certificate of death, and the official death certificate is issued by the Zivilstandsamt in Vaduz.
We arrange the permit to take the body out of the country
We gather everything the Liechtenstein authorities require for a body to leave the country ourselves.
We prepare the Ukrainian side
Translations and their certification, the certificate of no prohibited items, and the documents for the Embassy of Ukraine in Bern.
We prepare the body and the coffin
A hermetic metal coffin, the kind the Ukrainian border accepts.
We bring the deceased home
By specialist vehicle or partly by plane. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town.
We work out your price

Documents in Liechtenstein
The list of documents is short, but each one has to be translated into Ukrainian and certified. Otherwise Ukraine will not accept it.
What Liechtenstein issues
- Ärztlicher Totenschein: the medical certificate of death. Everything else starts from it.
- The official death certificate (amtlicher Totenschein): issued by the Zivilstandsamt in Vaduz.
- The permit to take the body out of the country: we arrange it ourselves.
What we take on
- We collect the documents where the body is now: at the hospital, at the civil registry office, in the municipality.
- We translate the German-language certificates into Ukrainian and certify the translations.
- We submit the package to the Embassy of Ukraine in Switzerland on the family's behalf.
- We put together everything Ukrainian border customs will ask for.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
- A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to arrange it.
Liechtenstein is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses, which its neighbours rely on. So we check the set of documents for the journey case by case. The general list of papers for Ukraine is on the “Documents” page.
The Embassy of Ukraine for Liechtenstein
There is no separate Ukrainian embassy in Liechtenstein. The Embassy of Ukraine in Switzerland, in Bern, also covers the country. An honorary consulate of Ukraine operates in Vaduz.
- The death of a Ukrainian citizen abroad is registered by the consul. This needs a medical document and a death certificate from the local authorities, translated into Ukrainian and certified.
- No consular fee is charged for registering the death or for the first death certificate.
- For the social protection authorities the consul provides a certificate, which the family needs to claim the funeral allowance.
- The certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin is issued by the local authorities, and the embassy legalises it. Without it, the body cannot cross the Ukrainian border.
A foreign death certificate is recognised in Ukraine only with an apostille or legalisation. You will not have to go to Bern: we submit the documents ourselves. More in the article “Death certificate abroad”.
How we bring the deceased home from Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein borders Austria, and the road usually runs that way: through the Schaanwald customs post towards Feldkirch. From there we choose the route to suit your case.
Where we collect from
Liechtenstein is small, so we collect the deceased from any of its villages and towns: Vaduz, Schaan, Eschen, Balzers, Triesen or another, from a hospital or from another place where the deceased is. The road usually starts through Austria, and the route depends on that.
By road
We usually go through Austria, then through Czechia, or through Slovakia and Hungary, to the Ukrainian border. The specialist vehicle goes straight to your town, and the coffin is not reloaded on the way.
Plane plus road
The nearest large airport is Zurich. From there we fly with a connection to an airport near Ukraine and continue by road. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours.
How long the journey takes
The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. The time before departure depends on how quickly the documents are issued.
At the Ukrainian border the deceased must be in a hermetic metal coffin, which is put under official seal. Customs clearance is done on a written statement in free form, submitted with the documents. We prepare the statement and the documents. More on the pages “Road transport” and “Air transport”.
What repatriation from Liechtenstein costs
The “from” price covers the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service and is not included.
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with the hospital and the morgue
- local, consular and border documents
- preparing the body for the journey
- hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
- sealing as the border requires
- usually by road; if needed, part of the way by air
- handover to the family in your town
Farewell coffin: quoted separately.
What can change the price
The price depends on the town in Ukraine we are travelling to, on whether we go by road or part of the way by plane, on the model of coffin and on how many documents have to be prepared from scratch. Give us these details and we will give you the exact price. Prices for other countries are on the “Prices” page.

Questions about repatriation from Liechtenstein
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Liechtenstein?
From €3,300. The price covers the papers from Vaduz, submission to the embassy in Bern, preparation of the body, a hermetic coffin and the road through Austria to your town. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. Call us and we will give you the price for your case.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. If part of the journey is by plane from Zurich, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The longest wait is usually for the documents, so we prepare the local and the Ukrainian papers at the same time.
Do I deal with Switzerland or with Liechtenstein?
With both, and we do it for you. The death certificate is issued by the civil registry office (Zivilstandsamt) in Vaduz, and the Ukrainian documents are prepared by the Embassy of Ukraine in Bern. There is also an honorary consulate of Ukraine in Vaduz.
Who issues the death certificate?
A doctor usually writes the medical certificate, and the official death certificate is issued by the Zivilstandsamt in Vaduz. For Ukraine it must be translated and certified. That is our job too.
Which documents do you need from the family?
We obtain the certificates from Vaduz, and we submit the package to Bern ourselves. From you we need the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, a document showing that you are a relative and a power of attorney for us. If you live in Switzerland or Liechtenstein, it is convenient to arrange the power of attorney there. If you are in Ukraine, we will tell you how to arrange it.
Do I need to travel?
Usually not, either to Vaduz or to Bern. We collect the deceased, obtain the certificates and submit the documents to the embassy. If an office wants your signature in person, we will warn you in advance. The article “If the family cannot travel abroad” explains what can be done from home.
What kind of coffin is needed? Is embalming compulsory?
For entry into Ukraine you need a hermetic metal coffin, which is put under official seal. Embalming depends on the route: some airlines accept only embalmed bodies. Preparation of the body is already in the price; if embalming is needed, we will tell you in advance. More in the “Preparing the body” section.
The deceased had insurance. What should I do?
The policy may have been taken out in Ukraine, in Liechtenstein or in Switzerland. Find it and send us a photo before you hire anyone: the insurer usually wants to agree the costs in advance, otherwise the compensation can be lost. If the policy does not cover the whole journey, we will work out the rest separately and tell you straight away.
Which places in Liechtenstein do you collect from?
From any municipality in the country: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Tell us the municipality and the address, and we will arrange a time for us to collect the deceased.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home?
Yes. An urn enters Ukraine with the death certificate and the certificate of no prohibited items, legalised by the embassy. Transporting an urn costs from €700. More on the “Urn transport” page.
