Repatriation of the deceased from Israel to Ukraine

Summary. We will give you the price of bringing the deceased home from Israel within 5 minutes, once we know the city of departure and the destination; the funeral in Ukraine is extra. Israel is far away, so the journey includes a flight: a plane to an airport near Ukraine and then our vehicle to your town. A doctor first issues a notification of death, and the Population and Immigration Authority issues the death certificate; if the cause of death is not established, an autopsy is possible. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

What we do when you call

A death often happens during a visit to relatives or on holiday, when the family knows neither the local rules nor Hebrew. In Israel we organise everything on the spot ourselves, and XREQUIEM manages the whole case.

  1. We listen and give you the price

We ask which city the body is in now and which documents already exist. At the same time we will give you the amount for your city.

  2. The notification of death

In a hospital it is written by a doctor. If the person died outside a hospital, death is declared by a doctor who was present or by an ambulance paramedic. This is not yet the death certificate.

  3. The death certificate

It is issued in Hebrew by the Population and Immigration Authority, part of Israel's Ministry of the Interior. We take care of the translation and certification for Ukraine.

  4. An autopsy, if one is ordered

It is possible when the cause of death is unknown, sudden or violent. After the autopsy the body is released.

  5. The Ukrainian side

We submit the documents to the Embassy of Ukraine in Tel Aviv. There the death of a Ukrainian citizen is registered and the papers are certified for the border.

  6. The coffin and preparation

The body goes into a sealed, hermetic metal coffin. If the airline requires embalming, we arrange it in advance.

  7. We take the deceased home

By air to an airport near Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town.

Documents in Israel

Here is what the papers are and who issues them. We confirm the full list for your case with the Israeli authorities, because it depends on the place and cause of death.

What Israel issues

  • Notification of death: written by a doctor (in a hospital) or a paramedic. It is not a death certificate.
  • Death certificate: issued by the Population and Immigration Authority, in Hebrew.
  • Burial permit from the local health bureau: nobody is buried in Israel without it. Whether it is needed for taking a body out, we confirm with the authorities.
  • Autopsy documents, if there was an autopsy. If the police were called, they may sign a waiver of autopsy.
  • The carrier's documents: the air waybill for the coffin.

We go through these administrative steps on the family's behalf.

What we take on

  • We obtain the notification, the certificate and the other papers.
  • We book the air transport and obtain the air waybill.
  • We translate the documents into Ukrainian, certify them and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine.
  • We prepare the coffin as the Ukrainian border requires.
  • We draw up the customs statement and the papers for the Ukrainian border.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
  • Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.

The general list of papers is on the Documents page. What to do in the first hours is on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Israel

Ukraine's only mission in Israel is the Embassy in Tel Aviv. The Israeli death certificate is in Hebrew, so for the consul it is translated into Ukrainian and certified.

  • Without the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin, issued by an authority of the country of death and certified by the Ukrainian consulate, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.
  • How the consul registers the death, which papers are needed for the funeral allowance in Ukraine and whether a consular fee applies, we confirm before filing. The general rules for all countries are in the article below.

Usually you do not need to go to Tel Aviv: we prepare and submit the documents to the Embassy. More in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.

How we bring the deceased home from Israel

The journey from Israel includes a flight: by air to an airport near Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle to your town. A road journey would be very long, through several countries.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Beersheba, Netanya, Ashdod and from any other Israeli town: from a hospital or a morgue. Name the city where the body is now: it decides which airport the flight leaves from. Israel's main international airport is Ben Gurion, near Tel Aviv.

Plane to an airport near Ukraine

Airlines carry the coffin in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.

Our vehicle to your home

At the airport the coffin is met by our specialist vehicle, which takes it across the border to your town in Ukraine.

How long it takes

The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the time goes on the documents, an autopsy if one is ordered, and booking the flight.

The Ukrainian border requires a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. We agree the coffin with the airline in advance. More on the Air transport and Coffins pages.

What to know about Israel

A few rules of the country that affect timing and papers. Source: the UK government guidance for families “When someone dies in Israel” (11 November 2025). It is written for British families, so we confirm each point with the Israeli authorities for your case.

  • The cause of death on the certificate. If no autopsy is performed, the Israeli certificate does not state a cause of death. In exceptional cases the National Centre of Forensic Medicine and the Ministry of Health have said they may review other documents instead; we ask the authorities whether this applies to your case. Tell us at once if the cause of death is needed for insurance or an estate.
  • The autopsy report. It is not usually given to the next of kin; a lawyer can apply for a copy.
  • Burial in Israel. Only people of the Jewish faith are buried in the Jewish cemeteries. For civil burial and for foreign nationals separate areas and burial grounds are set aside, and the cost depends on the cemetery. If you are considering a burial in Israel instead of the journey home, tell us before we book the flight.
  • The person's belongings. What the person had with them is normally handed to you or to the Israeli police. In an investigation it may be kept as evidence until the case is closed. If you want things sent home with the body, tell us in advance and we will check whether that is possible.

Questions about repatriation from Israel

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Israel?

We work out the price for Israel individually. It depends on the city, the flight and what insurance covers. Call us or send a request and we will give you the price for the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is priced separately.

How long does it take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the time goes on the death certificate, an autopsy if there is one, the Embassy and booking the flight. We run them in parallel.

Is an autopsy compulsory?

Not always. According to government guidance for families, an autopsy is possible when the cause of death is unknown, sudden or violent. If the police request one, they first seek the consent of the next of kin; if relatives cannot be found or refuse, the police must obtain a court order. Autopsies are performed only at the National Centre of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv. We stay in touch with the authorities and tell you when the body is released.

Who issues the death certificate in Israel?

The Population and Immigration Authority. In a hospital a doctor writes only a notification of death, a different document, which is needed, among other things, for the burial permit. The certificate is in Hebrew, so it is translated and certified for Ukraine.

Is embalming compulsory?

It depends on the airline: some accept only embalmed bodies. So it is best to tell us about it at once. More about preparing the body.

What kind of coffin is needed?

At the Ukrainian border, a hermetic metal coffin under official seal is required. What it looks like depends on the airline's requirements, and we agree it in advance. Which coffins exist is on the Coffins page.

Do I have to fly to Israel?

In most cases, no. We gather the papers on the spot ourselves and keep you updated by phone or on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If we need your signature in person, we will tell you in advance. More in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.

Which documents do you need from the family?

The deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document showing that you are related and a power of attorney for us. We take care of the Israeli documents, the translations and the Embassy.

Will insurance cover the transport?

Yes, if the policy provides for transporting the body. Photograph the policy and send it to us: we will check the terms and contact the insurer ourselves. Better not to pay for the transport yourself until the insurer has agreed, or the compensation may not be paid. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home.

Can an urn with ashes be brought home?

Yes. We will tell you the cost after a short conversation: it depends on the route. Cremation is permitted in Israel. For the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate; it is also worth having the cremation certificate and telling the airline in advance. More on the Urn transport page.
