The coffin is a soldered zinc one, and for a flight the body is embalmed. We go by road through Germany and Poland or with an air leg (from 2.5 hours). The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Call us and within 5 minutes you will have the exact price.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

The steps, from the first call to your town

The main Danish document for taking a body out of the country is the ligpas, a “body passport”. Getting it requires several certificates and a prepared coffin. Here is the whole route.

  1. The first conversation

We ask which city the deceased is in, who in the family we can talk to and whether you have the deceased's passport. We tell you the price straight away.

  2. The death certificate

We need the medical data from the death certificate (dødsattest), in particular whether there was an infectious disease.

  3. Registering the death with the parish

In Denmark the death is confirmed by the burial authority, which is the church parish where the death occurred.

  4. The zinc coffin

We solder the zinc coffin shut and fill in the soldering certificate, the loddeattest. We do this. We keep track of the deadlines.

  5. Embalming, if the deceased travels by air

For transport by plane the body is embalmed and an embalming certificate is issued.

  6. The ligpas and legalisation

Once the ligpas is issued, it is legalised at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, because Ukraine is not a party to the agreements that simplify the transport of bodies.

  7. The journey and handing over to the family

By road, or with an air leg, to your town.

Documents in Denmark

The ligpas is issued by the supervision and advice units of the Danish Patient Safety Authority (Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed). The application is submitted with the following documents.

The package for the ligpas

  • Dødsattest: the medical data from the death certificate, including any infectious disease.
  • Confirmation of the registration of the death: the parish's decision on the application “Anmodning om Begravelse og Kremering”.
  • Our application for permission to transport the body abroad, with a description of the coffin.
  • Loddeattest: the certificate that the zinc coffin has been soldered shut.
  • Balsameringsattest: the embalming certificate, if the body travels by plane.

What we do

  • We collect the medical data and the confirmation from the parish.
  • We solder the zinc coffin ourselves and, if the route includes a flight, arrange the embalming.
  • We make sure the ligpas application is submitted on time and arrange the legalisation at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • We arrange the translations into Ukrainian.
  • We prepare the certificate that the coffin contains no prohibited items and the declaration for Ukrainian customs.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, if you have it.
  • Your passport and a document showing you are a relative.
  • Your consent for us to act on behalf of the family.

Why legalisation? Ukraine is not a party to the international agreements that simplify the transport of bodies, so Danish rules require the ligpas to be legalised at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

What to do in the first hours is on the page “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”. The full list of documents is in the “Documents” section.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Denmark

The Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Denmark is in Copenhagen. There is an honorary consulate in Outrup, in the Region of Southern Denmark. An honorary consul does not issue documents; for that you need the embassy.

What the consul of Ukraine does when a citizen of Ukraine dies:

  • registers the death (at the place of residence, the place of death, the place where the body was found or the place of burial);
  • issues the first death certificate free of consular fees;
  • issues a certificate that the family uses to apply for the funeral allowance in Ukraine;
  • legalises the certificate that the coffin contains no prohibited items, which Ukrainian law requires when a body is brought into Ukraine.

We check the list of documents for the consulate with the embassy in Copenhagen each time.

How we bring the deceased home from Denmark

Denmark is far from Ukraine, so we choose the route together with you. How the body is prepared depends on it: for a flight, Danish rules require embalming.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Esbjerg and from any other Danish town or from the islands: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Tell us where the body is, and we will work out the route and the amount for your case.

All the way by road

Our specialist vehicle takes the soldered coffin from Denmark to the Ukrainian border and on to your town. The road is long, through Germany and Poland, so we allow more time for it than for a route by air.

Plane and road

We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine: the plane flies to an airport near Ukraine (Warsaw, Rzeszów or Chișinău). The air leg takes from 2.5 hours, then the journey continues by road.

Timing

The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. The actual time depends on how quickly the ligpas is issued and legalised.

At the Ukrainian border the body must be in a metal, hermetic coffin, and the coffin is sealed. A soldered zinc coffin is exactly that: metal and hermetic. More on the pages “Road transport” and “Air transport”.

Questions about repatriation from Denmark

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Denmark?

From €2,800 for the whole journey home: documents, the ligpas and legalisation, the zinc coffin, preparing the body, transport and crossing the border. A funeral in Ukraine is separate.

How long does it take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. If part of the journey is by plane, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The documents take the most time: the ligpas and its legalisation at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

What is a ligpas?

It is the Danish permit to take a body to another country, a “body passport”. It is issued by the Danish Patient Safety Authority. We submit the application, with a description of the coffin.

Why is a zinc coffin needed?

Danish rules require the zinc coffin to be soldered shut and a soldering certificate filled in when a body leaves the country; we do this. Ukrainian law also requires a metal, hermetic and sealed coffin. More about coffins on the page “Coffins and sealed metal liners”.

Is embalming compulsory?

If the body travels by plane, yes: Danish rules require embalming and an embalming certificate. For a road route, we decide how to prepare the body depending on your case. Preparing the body is already included in the price. If embalming turns out to be needed, we will tell you in advance whether the amount changes. More in “Preparing the body”.

Which documents do you need from the family?

The deceased's passport, if you have it, your passport and a document showing you are a relative. We take care of the Danish certificates, obtaining and legalising the ligpas and the translations.

Do I need to travel to Denmark?

Usually not. We submit the application for the ligpas. If an office asks for a relative to be there in person, we will tell you in advance. What you can do from home is described in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.

What should I do first if there was insurance?

Keep the policy at hand and tell us about it on the first call. The transport must be approved by the insurer, otherwise the compensation can be refused; we deal with that. We will tell you in advance about any part the policy does not cover.

Which cities in Denmark do you collect from?

From any town or city in Denmark, including the islands: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is.

Can you bring home an urn with ashes?

Yes. Danish rules do not require a ligpas for ashes. At the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate that it contains no prohibited items, and customs clearance is done on the basis of a written declaration. Bringing home an urn costs from €700. More in “Urn transport”.
