Repatriation of the deceased from Luxembourg to Ukraine
from €3,300 including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. We will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.
Summary. Bringing the deceased home from Luxembourg to Ukraine costs from €3,300 for the entire journey: the paperwork, the coffin and the road to your town. The funeral in Ukraine is extra. A death in Luxembourg must be declared to the commune within 24 hours, and a laissez-passer mortuaire is needed for burial outside Benelux. There is no separate Ukrainian embassy: the Embassy in Brussels handles the documents. We usually go overland through Germany and Poland. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection.

What we do when you call
In Luxembourg a death is reported within a day, and how the body will be transported is decided at that point. So it is best to call us as early as possible: we will tell you straight away what to say at the hospital or the commune. We do the work ourselves, and XREQUIEM runs the whole process for you.
We take your call at any time
We ask in which commune the death occurred, where the body is now and whether you have the deceased's passport. We tell you the price straight away.
We obtain the medical documents
Everything starts with the doctor's medical certificate of death. The other documents are drawn up on the basis of it.
We report the death at the commune
The death is registered by the commune's civil status office (état civil). The transport of the body is agreed there as well.
We arrange the permit to take the body out of the country
For burial outside the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) a “body passport” is needed: the laissez-passer mortuaire. It is drawn up by a medical inspector of the sanitary service.
We prepare the Ukrainian part
Translations and their certification, the certificate of no prohibited items and the documents for the Embassy of Ukraine.
We prepare the body and a hermetic coffin
A coffin that will be accepted at the Ukrainian border.
We bring the deceased home
By specialist vehicle, or partly by plane. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town.

Documents in Luxembourg
The documents here have French names, but there are only three of them, and they follow one another: the doctor's certificate, the registration at the commune and the “body passport”.
What Luxembourg issues
- Attestation médicale: the doctor's medical certificate of death. Everything starts with it.
- Registration of the death: at the commune's civil status office (état civil), within 24 hours of the death. The same office is where the transport of the body is registered.
- Laissez-passer mortuaire: the “body passport” for burial abroad, outside the Benelux. It is drawn up by a medical inspector of the sanitary inspection of the Directorate of Health (Inspection sanitaire, Direction de la santé), on the basis of the doctor's certificate.
What we take on
- We arrange the registration of the death and the permit to take the body out ourselves.
- We translate the French documents into Ukrainian and certify the translations.
- We submit the documents to the Embassy of Ukraine on the family's behalf.
- The papers for customs at the Ukrainian border are ours to prepare.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing you are a relative.
- A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to arrange it from a distance.
Luxembourg is a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses. Under it, the body travels with a special document: the same laissez-passer mortuaire. Ukraine is not a party to the agreement, so we prepare the Ukrainian documents separately. The general list of papers for Ukraine is in the “Documents” section.
The Embassy of Ukraine for Luxembourg
There is no separate Embassy of Ukraine in Luxembourg. Luxembourg is covered by the Embassy of Ukraine in Belgium, in Brussels. In Luxembourg itself there is an honorary consulate of Ukraine.
- The death of a citizen of Ukraine abroad is registered by the consul at the place where the person died or lived, where the body was found, or where the burial takes place.
- Registration needs a medical document and the death certificate from the local authorities, both translated into Ukrainian and certified.
- Registering the death and issuing the first death certificate carry no consular fee.
- The family gets from the consul a certificate for the social protection authorities; it is the basis for the funeral allowance.
- The certificate that the body and the coffin contain no prohibited items is issued by the Luxembourg authorities, and the embassy legalises it. Without it, the body cannot cross the Ukrainian border.
You will not have to travel to Brussels: we submit the documents. More about the consul's role is in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Luxembourg
Luxembourg is a long way from the Ukrainian border, so we plan the route around your case: the town in Ukraine, the timing and the family's wishes.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange, Differdange and from any other commune in Luxembourg: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Name the commune where the death occurred, because that is where the death is declared and the transport is agreed.
By road
We usually go by road: through Germany and Poland to a crossing point on the Ukrainian border. A specialist vehicle drives straight through, so the coffin is never moved from one vehicle to another.
Plane and road
When speed matters most, part of the journey can be by plane to an airport near Ukraine, followed by a road leg. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.
How long it takes
The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. How long you wait before departure depends on how quickly the documents are issued.
At the Ukrainian border the body must be in a hermetic metal coffin, and the coffin is sealed. Customs clearance is done on a free-form written declaration, together with the documents. We prepare all of this. More on the pages “Road transport” and “Air transport”.
Price of repatriation from Luxembourg
The “from” price covers the body's whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is not included; we price it separately.
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with the hospital and the morgue
- local, consular and border documents
- preparing the body for the journey
- hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
- sealing as the border requires
- usually by road; if needed, part of the way by air
- handover to the family in your town
Farewell coffin: quoted separately.
What can change the price
It depends on where exactly in Ukraine we are going, whether we go by road or partly by plane, which coffin you choose, and which documents already exist and which have to be made from scratch. Tell us these details and we will give you the exact amount. Prices for other countries are on the “Prices” page.

Questions about repatriation from Luxembourg
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Luxembourg?
From €3,300. For this we arrange the registration at the commune and the laissez-passer mortuaire, prepare the Ukrainian documents, the body and a hermetic coffin, and bring the deceased across half of Europe to your town. A funeral in Ukraine is priced separately. We will give you the exact amount as soon as we know the town in Ukraine and the type of transport.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. If part of the journey is by plane, the air leg takes from 2.5 hours. The documents usually take the longest, so we prepare the Luxembourg and the Ukrainian papers in parallel.
A death has to be reported within 24 hours. What if we missed the deadline?
Please do not worry, and do not try to sort it out on your own. Call us. We will find out what has already been done at the commune and carry on from there.
What is a laissez-passer mortuaire (body passport)?
It is a “body passport”: the document a body crosses borders with. For burial outside the Benelux it is drawn up by a medical inspector of the sanitary service. We arrange it ourselves.
Where is the nearest Embassy of Ukraine?
In Brussels: the Embassy of Ukraine in Belgium covers Luxembourg as well. There is also an honorary consulate of Ukraine in Luxembourg. We submit the documents to the embassy, so you do not need to go.
Which documents do you need from the family?
We deal with the commune and the sanitary inspection, so you do not need to obtain any Luxembourg papers yourself. We need the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, a document showing you are a relative, and a power of attorney. If you are in Luxembourg yourself, send us a photo of the deceased's passport straight away: the registration at the commune will then go faster.
What kind of coffin is needed? Is embalming required?
To enter Ukraine the body must be in a sealed hermetic metal coffin. Embalming depends on the route: some airlines accept only embalmed bodies. Preparing the body is already included in the price; if embalming turns out to be needed, we will tell you in advance. More in the article “Coffin and embalming for bringing a body to Ukraine”.
The deceased had insurance. What should I do?
The policy may have been taken out in Ukraine or in Luxembourg. Find it and send us a photo before you agree to the services of any funeral home: the insurer usually approves the costs in advance. What the policy does not cover, we will calculate separately and tell you at once.
Which places in Luxembourg do you collect from?
From any commune in the country: from a hospital, a morgue or another place where the deceased is. Tell us the commune and the address, and we will arrange a time for us to collect the deceased.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes. For an urn you need the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items, legalised by the embassy. Urn transport is priced from €700. More on the page “Urn transport”.
