Repatriation of the deceased from Azerbaijan to Ukraine

Summary. We will give you the price of bringing the deceased home from Azerbaijan within 5 minutes, once we know the city of departure and the destination; the funeral in Ukraine is extra. Azerbaijan is far away, so the journey includes a flight: a plane to an airport near Ukraine and then our vehicle to your town. Without a local death certificate neither burial nor transport is possible, and it is issued only after a medical certificate; for foreigners an autopsy is normally carried out. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

What we do when you call

The local authorities work in Azerbaijani and do not usually offer services in English, so a family struggles on its own. You do not need to look for anyone else, XREQUIEM handles the whole way home.

  1. We listen and give you the price

We ask which city the body is in now and which documents already exist. At the same time we will give you the amount for your city.

  2. The mortuary and the autopsy

If the person died outside a hospital, the emergency services attend and inform the district police, and the body is taken to the district mortuary. For foreigners an autopsy is normally carried out, and the body stays in the mortuary until it is done.

  3. The medical certificate

The district Medical Court Examination Department issues the medical death certificate on form AZS-106. Without it the death certificate is not issued.

  4. The death certificate

It is issued in Azerbaijani by the district registration department or the ASAN service. We take this step ourselves. Without the certificate neither burial nor transport can take place.

  5. The Ukrainian side

We translate and certify the documents and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Baku. There the death of a Ukrainian citizen is registered and the papers are certified for the border.

  6. The coffin and preparation

The body goes into a sealed, hermetic metal coffin. If the airline requires embalming, we arrange it in advance.

  7. We take the deceased home

By air to an airport near Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town.

Documents in Azerbaijan

Here is what the papers are and who issues them. We confirm the final list for your case with the Azerbaijani authorities, because it depends on the place and cause of death.

What Azerbaijan issues

  • Medical death certificate (form AZS-106): issued by the district Medical Court Examination Department once the cause of death is established.
  • Death certificate: issued by the district registration department or the ASAN service, in Azerbaijani. It needs form AZS-106 and a copy of the passport.
  • Details of the deceased for registration: a birth certificate (showing the place of birth and the parents' names), religion, an identity document, details of any marriage and any divorce papers.
  • The carrier's documents: the air waybill for the coffin.

According to the UK government's guidance for families, the local authorities do not provide services in English, so every document has to be translated.

What we take on

  • We obtain the certificate, the death certificate and the other papers.
  • We book the air transport and obtain the air waybill.
  • We translate the documents into Ukrainian, certify them and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine.
  • We prepare the coffin as the Ukrainian border requires.
  • We draw up the customs statement and the papers for the Ukrainian border.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
  • Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.

The general list of papers is on the Documents page. What to do in the first hours is on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Azerbaijan

Ukraine's only mission in Azerbaijan is the Embassy in Baku. The Azerbaijani death certificate is in Azerbaijani, so for the consul it is translated into Ukrainian and certified.

  • The certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin is issued for the border by an authority of the country of death, and the Ukrainian consulate certifies it. Without it the body will not be let through.
  • How the consul registers the death, which papers are needed for the funeral allowance in Ukraine and whether a consular fee applies, we confirm before filing. The general rules for all countries are in the article below.

Usually you do not need to go to Baku: we prepare and submit the documents to the Embassy. More in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.

How we bring the deceased home from Azerbaijan

The journey from Azerbaijan includes a flight: by air to an airport near Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle to your town. A road journey would be very long, through several countries.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Baku, Ganja, Sumgait, Mingachevir, Shirvan, Lankaran and from any other town or district of Azerbaijan: from a hospital or a morgue. Mortuaries there are usually attached to hospitals, and cold storage is available in Baku; in the regions conditions can be more basic, so tell us the city at once. It decides which airport the flight leaves from. Azerbaijan's main international airport is Heydar Aliyev, 20 km from Baku.

Plane to an airport near Ukraine

Airlines carry the coffin in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.

Our vehicle to your home

At the airport the coffin is met by our specialist vehicle, which takes it across the border to your town in Ukraine.

How long it takes

The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the time goes on the documents, the autopsy and booking the flight.

The Ukrainian border requires a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. We agree the coffin with the airline in advance. More on the Air transport and Coffins pages.

What to know about Azerbaijan

A few rules of the country that affect timing and papers. Source: the UK government guidance for families “When someone dies in Azerbaijan” (24 February 2026). It is written for British families, so we confirm each point with the Azerbaijani authorities for your case.

  • Infectious diseases. If the person had hepatitis, HIV or another infection, tell us at once: the local authorities must be informed so that they can take precautions.
  • Information about the case. According to the guidance, access to information about a death is restricted until the evidence has been reviewed, and the authorities usually do not release it to the next of kin until the preliminary investigation ends. That can take several months, and in complicated cases longer. A copy of the autopsy report is requested in writing from the Central Medical Examination Court.
  • Burial on the spot. Burial in Azerbaijan is possible, but there are no crematoria. If you are considering a burial there instead of the journey home, tell us before we book the flight.

Questions about repatriation from Azerbaijan

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Azerbaijan?

We work out the price for Azerbaijan individually. It depends on the city, the flight and what insurance covers. Call us or send a request and we will give you the price for the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is priced separately.

How long does it take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the time goes on the medical certificate, the death certificate, the Embassy and booking the flight. We run them in parallel.

Is an autopsy compulsory?

According to the UK government's guidance for families, in Azerbaijan foreigners who die are always autopsied, usually within a day, at times without the family's consent, and no fee is charged. The body stays in the mortuary until the autopsy is done, and is then released for burial or transport. We stay in touch with the mortuary and tell you when the body is released.

What is needed before transport is possible?

The death certificate. It requires the medical death certificate on form AZS-106 from the district Medical Court Examination Department and a copy of the passport. We obtain them ourselves.

Is embalming compulsory?

It depends on the airline: some accept only embalmed bodies. So it is best to tell us about it at once. More about preparing the body.

What kind of coffin is needed?

At the Ukrainian border, the coffin must be sealed metal with an official seal. What it looks like depends on the airline's requirements, and we agree it in advance. Which coffins exist is on the Coffins page.

Do I have to fly to Azerbaijan?

In most cases, no. We gather the papers on the spot ourselves and keep you updated by phone or on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If we need your signature in person, we will tell you in advance. More in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.

Which documents do you need from the family?

The deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document showing that you are related and a power of attorney for us. We take care of the Azerbaijani documents, the translations and the Embassy.

Will insurance cover the transport?

Yes, if the policy provides for transporting the body. Photograph the policy and send it to us: we will check the terms and contact the insurer ourselves. Better not to pay for the transport yourself until the insurer has agreed, or the compensation may not be paid. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home.

Can an urn with ashes be brought home?

There are no crematoria in Azerbaijan, so ashes cannot be obtained there. If cremation has already been carried out in another country, we will tell you the cost of transporting the urn after a short conversation: it depends on the route. For the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate. More on the Urn transport page.
