Repatriation of the deceased from Georgia to Ukraine

from €3,200 including the documents, the coffin and the journey to your town. We will give you the exact price within 5 minutes.

Summary. Repatriating the deceased from Georgia to Ukraine costs from €3,200 for the whole journey: documents, the coffin and transport to your town; the funeral in Ukraine is extra. Georgia is far, so we go with an air leg (from 2.5 hours) and a road leg to your town. Georgian customs require five documents, from the forensic medical expert's report to the customs report, and the coffin is sealed in the presence of a customs officer. The body's journey home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after collection. Call us and within 5 minutes you will have the exact price.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact the hospital and the police.
  2. Find the insurance policy. The compensation depends on it.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. The passport can come later.

What we do when you call

In Georgia a great deal is decided by the forensic medical expert and by customs: the body is examined at the morgue. So the steps have to be coordinated, and nothing should have to be redone at the airport. We organise and run the steps ourselves, and XREQUIEM manages the case from start to finish.

  1. We listen and give you the price

We ask which city the deceased is in and which documents you already have. We give you the price to your town straight away.

  2. We obtain the forensic medical expert's report

It is issued at the morgue. A post mortem is usually done there too, but the family can ask for it not to be done. Customs needs the report in any case.

  3. We obtain the death certificate

It is issued by the regional branch of the House of Justice (Public Service Hall) of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.

  4. We handle the Ukrainian side

We translate and certify the documents and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Tbilisi. There the death is registered and the papers are certified for the border.

  5. We prepare the body and the coffin

If embalming is needed, we arrange it as soon as possible. The deceased is placed in a zinc coffin inside a wooden transport crate.

  6. We go through customs

A customs officer and a doctor inspect the body at the morgue, and the coffin is sealed in the customs officer's presence. The permit to take the body out of the country is issued by the Tbilisi customs office at the airport.

  7. We take the deceased home

By air to an airport near Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town.

Documents in Georgia

To take a body out of the country, Georgian customs requires five documents. Here is what they are and who issues them.

What Georgia issues

  • Medical report on the death: issued by the forensic medical expert at the morgue. It states whether the body has any infectious disease and gives the results of the post mortem, if one was done.
  • Death certificate (გარდაცვალების მოწმობა): issued by the regional branch of the House of Justice.
  • Sanitary certificate from the sanitary and epidemiological station.
  • Customs report: drawn up after the body has been inspected at the morgue.
  • Air waybill: the carrier's document for the coffin.

If the body has been embalmed, you can also obtain an embalming certificate. The airline will often need it.

What we take care of

  • We obtain the report, the death certificate and the other certificates ourselves.
  • We arrange the inspection of the body by the customs officer and the doctor, and the sealing of the coffin.
  • We book the air transport and obtain the air waybill.
  • We translate the documents into Ukrainian, certify them and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine.
  • We draw up the written statement for customs at the Ukrainian border and attach the documents to it.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
  • Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.

The general list of papers is on the Documents page. For the first hours, see “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Georgia

Ukraine has one mission in Georgia: the Embassy in Tbilisi. The Embassy has a hotline for cases when a citizen of Ukraine dies.

  • The consul registers the death of a citizen of Ukraine abroad. The basis is the medical document on the death and a certificate from the authorities of the country.
  • The consul needs the Georgian documents certified and translated into Ukrainian.
  • The consul registers the death and issues the first death certificate without a consular fee.
  • The consul gives the family a certificate for the social protection authorities, so that the family can apply for the funeral allowance in Ukraine.
  • The certificate of no prohibited items in the body or the coffin is issued by an authority of the country of death and certified by the Ukrainian consulate. Without it, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.

We prepare the documents for the Embassy. You can read more about the consul's role in the article “The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad”.

How we bring the deceased home from Georgia

Georgia is a long way from Ukraine, and in practice the journey home from there includes an air leg. Going entirely by road would be very long and would cross several countries. We choose the method of transport to suit your case.

Where we collect from

We collect the deceased from Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Zugdidi and from any other Georgian town or village: from a hospital morgue or from another place where the deceased is. Name the town, and we will tell you the route and the amount.

Plane plus vehicle

The plane flies to an airport near Ukraine, where our vehicle meets the coffin and takes it on to your town. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.

How the coffin is flown

Airlines carry the coffin in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight. We clear the documents with the countries involved before booking, so that the coffin is not held up at the airport.

How long it takes

The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the time usually goes on the documents and on booking the flight.

At the Ukrainian border the body must be in a hermetic metal coffin that is put under official seal. The zinc coffin used in Georgia meets this requirement. Customs clearance is done on a written statement with the documents, and we prepare them. More on the page “Air transport of the deceased to Ukraine”.

Price of repatriation from Georgia

Body from Georgia from €3,200
Urn with ashes from €700

This price covers the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service and is priced separately.

What the price includes

The price includes:

  • contact with the hospital and the morgue
  • local, consular and border documents
  • preparing the body for the journey
  • hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
  • sealing as the border requires
  • by air to an airport near Ukraine, then in our vehicle to your town
  • handover to the family in your town

Farewell coffin: quoted separately.

What can change the price

The price depends on the city in Georgia and the departure airport, the airline's fare on the date, whether embalming is needed and the destination in Ukraine. We take all of this into account when we give you the price. Prices for other countries are on the Prices page.

Questions about repatriation from Georgia

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Georgia?

The price is from €3,200 for the whole journey home. It covers the documents, preparing the body, the coffin for transport, the air leg, the road by vehicle and the border. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. What the price is made up of is explained in the article “How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad”.

How long does it take?

The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. Most of the waiting is for the papers: the forensic medical expert's report, the death certificate, the customs permit and the Embassy. We work on them in parallel.

Is a post mortem compulsory?

When a foreign national dies in Georgia, a post mortem is usually done, but the family can ask for it not to be done. Customs needs the forensic medical expert's report in any case. If you do not want a post mortem, tell us at once and we will pass your request on. We keep in touch with the morgue and will tell you when the report is ready.

Is embalming needed?

In Georgia it is done on request and for a fee at the forensic centre or the morgue, preferably within 10 hours of death. Whether you need it depends on the airline: some accept only embalmed bodies. So it is best to talk to us about embalming straight away. More on preparing the body.

Which documents do you need from the family?

Usually the deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document showing that you are related and a power of attorney for us. We take care of the Georgian documents, the translations, customs and the Embassy.

Do I need to travel to Georgia?

In most cases, no. We collect the papers ourselves and keep you updated by phone or on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If your signature is needed in person, we will tell you in advance. What can be done from home is explained in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.

What kind of coffin is needed?

For transport from Georgia a zinc coffin and a wooden transport crate are used. The Ukrainian border requires a hermetic metal coffin under official seal, and a zinc coffin meets this requirement. For the kinds of coffin, see “Coffins and sealed metal liners”.

Will insurance cover the transport?

It may, if the policy covers repatriation of the body. Take a photo of the policy and send it to us: we will check the terms and contact the insurer ourselves. It is better not to hire a local funeral home without the insurer's consent, because the compensation may not be paid. More in the article “Insurance and bringing a body home”.

Which cities in Georgia do you collect from?

From any city in Georgia: Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi and smaller towns. Tell us the city and the hospital, and we will explain how we organise the road to the airport.

Can an urn with ashes be brought home?

Yes. The price is from €700. An urn is simpler to fly than a coffin. For the Ukrainian border it needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items, certified by the consulate. More on “Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine”.
