How we handle a case from Czechia
We keep you updated at every step. Keep the contacts of the people who called you from Czechia: the employer, the doctor or the police. Do not pay anyone until you know the full price to your home. Here is what happens after your call.
The first conversation
We ask the city where the body is now and what the hospital or the police have told you. We tell you the exact price straight away.
We collect the deceased
We agree the time with the morgue or the hospital. If the documents are still being prepared, the body stays in a refrigerated chamber.
The Czech death certificate
We obtain the úmrtní list from the Czech registry office (matriční úřad).
The transport permit
We arrange the permit to take the body out of the country. We know which one your case needs.
The Ukrainian side
Translation, certification, the Ukrainian consulate in Prague or Brno, and the certificate for the border.
The road home
We drive in a specialist vehicle through Poland or Slovakia. At the Ukrainian border we handle everything ourselves. More on road transport.
Handing over to the family
We bring the deceased to where you will say goodbye. We can also arrange the funeral anywhere in Ukraine if you ask.

Documents in Czechia
What Czechia issues
- List o prohlídce zemřelého: the record of examination of the deceased. A doctor draws it up.
- Úmrtní list: the death certificate. The registry office (matriční úřad) issues it based on the examination record. The deadline is up to 30 days.
- Průvodní list: the accompanying letter, or “passport for the body”. For transport under the international agreement, it is issued by the regional public health station (krajská hygienická stanice).
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport or a copy.
- Your passport and a document proving the family relationship.
- The city where the death occurred, and whether the person had a Czech residence permit.
- If there was insurance: the policy number and the insurer's contacts.
We arrange everything else. You do not queue or write requests in Czech. The full list is on the Documents page.
The passport for the body and Ukraine
Czechia is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses. Between its parties, the passport for the body replaces most other documents. Ukraine is not a party, so the Ukrainian border always needs its own documents: the death certificate and the certificate that the body and the coffin contain no prohibited items, certified by the Ukrainian consulate. We prepare them in parallel with the Czech ones.
If the person had a residence permit
When a foreigner with a residence permit dies, the Czech registry office itself informs the foreign police and the embassy of the country of citizenship. This does not replace registering the death with the consul; we still do that.
The Embassy and consulate of Ukraine in Czechia
The death of a Ukrainian citizen abroad is registered by the consul. In Czechia there are two Ukrainian missions: the Embassy in Prague and the Consulate in Brno.
- The consul registers the death based on the Czech medical document and the death certificate, translated into Ukrainian and certified.
- Registration and the first Ukrainian death certificate are free of consular fees.
- The Ukrainian certificate is given to close relatives or sent to the family through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- The consul issues a certificate used in Ukraine to apply for the funeral allowance.
If you are in Ukraine and cannot travel, that is not a problem. We submit the documents and keep you updated.
How we bring the deceased home from Czechia
Czechia has no common border with Ukraine, so we travel in transit through Poland or Slovakia. We choose the route by the city we collect from and by your town in Ukraine. The journey home takes from 24 hours after collection.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň, Liberec, Olomouc, Karlovy Vary and from any other Czech town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or from another place where the deceased is. Ostrava is closer to the Ukrainian border than Karlovy Vary, so the amount is worked out for your town.
A plane is possible, but from Czechia the road is usually simpler: the specialist vehicle goes from the morgue to your town with no transfers.
Two Czech rules that affect the journey
- Embalming is not mandatory. But if an unembalmed body is transported for more than 8 hours or further than 500 km, an airtight coffin or refrigeration is required. The journey to Ukraine is longer than that, so we always meet this condition.
- Only an approved funeral vehicle. In Czechia, a body may be transported by road only in a vehicle approved as a funeral vehicle. An ordinary minibus is not allowed.
For the Ukrainian border, the body must be in an airtight metal coffin, which is sealed. It is opened only in exceptional cases: at a medical facility, in the presence of a customs officer and the accompanying person.
How an urn travels from Czechia
We bring an urn with ashes from a Czech crematorium to Ukraine by road, in transit through Poland or Slovakia. Czechia is not far, so an urn usually does not need a flight. We collect the urn where it is now: at the crematorium or in another place of storage.
The Czech cremation papers are translated into Ukrainian and certified. For the border we prepare the certificate of no prohibited items, legalised by the Ukrainian consulate in Prague or Brno. The death certificate goes with it, together with a short customs statement that we write.
An urn costs from €200 to bring home. How the service works is on the page “Urn transport”. For customs, flights and the post, see “Customs clearance of an urn with ashes”.
Price of repatriation from Czechia
The price covers the whole journey home. A funeral in Ukraine is separate.
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with the hospital and the morgue
- local, consular and border documents
- preparing the body for the journey
- hermetic coffin, soldered zinc liner
- sealing as the border requires
- usually by road; if needed, part of the way by air
- handover to the family in your town
Farewell coffin: quoted separately.
What the exact amount depends on
The city: Ostrava is closer to the border than Karlovy Vary or Plzeň. The route: through Poland or Slovakia. The coffin and preparing the body. How many documents need translating. Tell us the city and we will work it all out straight away. All countries are in the table on the Prices page.

Questions about repatriation from Czechia
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Czechia?
From €1,000, including documents, the coffin and transport to your town. A funeral in Ukraine is charged on its own. All prices are on the Prices page.
How long does it take?
The journey home with the deceased takes from 24 hours after collection. The time for documents depends on the Czech authorities: the registry office has up to 30 days to issue the death certificate. We do not wait for one document before starting on the next.
Is embalming mandatory in Czechia?
Under Czech law, no. But for a journey of more than 8 hours or 500 km without embalming, an airtight coffin or refrigeration is required. We will decide together what to choose, depending on the condition of the body and the timing. More on preparing the body.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport or a copy, your passport and a document showing you are a relative. If the person had a Czech residence permit, send us a photo of it too. If there was insurance, the policy details. We obtain the examination record and the úmrtní list ourselves.
Do I need to come to Czechia?
Usually not. We obtain the úmrtní list at the Czech registry office, and we also submit the documents to the Embassy in Prague or the Consulate in Brno. If a Czech office issues a paper only to a relative, we will warn you at the start. More in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.
The person lived in Czechia with a residence permit. Does anything change?
The Czech registry office will inform the foreign police and the embassy itself. The transport procedure is the same: Czech documents, registration with the consul, documents for the Ukrainian border.
Can insurance cover the transport?
It may, if the policy covers repatriation of the body. Send us a photo of the policy. We will check the terms and deal with the insurer ourselves. Often a policy pays only as far as the border; we will tell you about the rest in advance.
Which cities in Czechia do you collect from?
From any: Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň, Liberec, Olomouc, Hradec Králové, Pardubice and smaller towns and villages.
What should I do first?
The first steps are at the top of this page. They are described in detail on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad. If anything is unclear, call or write to us at any hour.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes, and the price is from €200. At the Ukrainian border an urn needs the same documents as a coffin. More on urn transport.
