What France requires when a body is brought in

For France, what matters most is the entry permit, the right documents and the coffin. Below are the requirements from French government sources, with a link next to each point.

The entry permit

  • Bringing into France the body of a person who died abroad, and transporting it to the place of burial or cremation, requires authorisation. service-public.gouv.fr
  • Entry of the body into France is authorised by the French embassy or consulate abroad. service-public.gouv.fr
  • In France, the formalities for transporting the body are handled by the funeral home (entreprise de pompes funèbres). service-public.gouv.fr

Documents and the apostille

  • According to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs table (updated 11 Sept 2026), Ukrainian civil-status documents, including death records, presented in France require an apostille. diplomatie.gouv.fr

We order the apostille and the translation where they are needed.

The coffin

If the body travels by air, we prepare this kind of coffin in Ukraine.

The French Embassy in Ukraine

The permit to bring a body or ashes into France is issued by the French embassy or consulate (see above). If the deceased was a French citizen, this is what the consulate also does:

  • If a French national dies in Ukraine, the French consulate makes sure the family is informed and advises on the legal formalities for repatriation or burial of the body or ashes; costs are borne by the family or the deceased's insurer. ua.diplomatie.gouv.fr
  • To transcribe the death into the French civil register, the original Ukrainian death certificate with an apostille and a translation by an approved translator (traducteur agréé) is filed (or a Ukrainian notarised copy, apostilled and translated). ua.diplomatie.gouv.fr
  • The death of a French national can be declared at the consulate for the district where it occurred, in person by appointment; there is no time limit for drawing up the death record. ua.diplomatie.gouv.fr

The Ukrainian side

We prepare the documents for taking the body out of Ukraine together with you.

The Ukrainian paperwork is the same for every country; it is all on the page “Repatriation of a body from Ukraine to another country”.

Who receives the deceased in France

We arrange the transport and hand the deceased over to the funeral home in France that the family chooses.

The farewell and the burial in France are a matter for the family and that funeral home.

An urn with ashes

  • Bringing into France the ashes of a person who died abroad also requires authorisation, given by the French embassy or consulate. service-public.gouv.fr

We can also bring an urn with ashes from Ukraine to France. We gather the documents for its permit too, and we will quote the price once we have your request.

Questions about repatriation from Ukraine to France

Who gives permission to bring a body into France?

The French embassy or consulate abroad. We gather the documents for this permit.

Is a hermetic coffin required?

Yes, if the body travels by air: the coffin must be hermetic, with a metal lining.

Does the Ukrainian death certificate need an apostille?

Yes. France asks for an apostille on Ukrainian civil status documents, the death certificate included.

How is the death of a French citizen entered in the French civil register?

You file the original Ukrainian death certificate with an apostille and a translation by an approved translator (traducteur agréé). A notarised copy, apostilled and translated, can replace the original. We will help you get the apostille.

Is a permit needed to bring an urn with ashes into France?

Yes, and it too comes from the French embassy or consulate.
