Vietnam's Import Requirements

Import Permit from the Embassy of Vietnam

To bring a body, skeletal remains, or ashes into Vietnam, an import permit is required. It is issued by a Vietnamese diplomatic mission abroad, usually within 1 day after submitting a complete application package. The permit is granted for Vietnamese citizens with permanent residence in Vietnam, overseas Vietnamese whose close relatives live in Vietnam, and foreign nationals with permanent residence in Vietnam.

The application (Form 01/NG-LS) must be accompanied by: the applicant's passport and proof of family relationship, the deceased's passport, a copy of the death certificate, a sanitary certificate (for a body), and a cremation certificate (for ashes).

Health Declaration and Quarantine

  • At the border, the body or ashes must be declared (Form 11 of Appendix V). The declaration must be accompanied by a copy of the sanitary treatment certificate from the country of departure (for a body), the import permit, and the death certificate (for a body). Document verification takes up to 15 minutes, and physical inspection takes up to an hour; afterward, a quarantine certificate is issued. Decree of the Government of Vietnam 165/2026/NĐ-CP, Articles 36, 38

Coffin

  • For cross-border transport, the body is placed in a three-layer coffin: the inner layer is soldered zinc with a moisture absorbent; the middle layer is wood; the outer layer is plywood. Ashes are placed in a leak-proof and unbreakable container. Circular 21/2021/TT-BYT, Article 6

Apostille

  • Since September 11, 2026, Vietnam accepts documents with an apostille, so Ukrainian documents are certified with an apostille and translated into Vietnamese. HCCH, 2026

The Ukrainian Side

  • We arrange everything needed to transport the body out of Ukraine; you only need to provide the documents that only the family can give. The certificate confirming the absence of extraneous items inside the coffin is issued by a forensic medical examiner in the presence of a customs officer. Customs Code of Ukraine, Art. 365

Who Receives the Body in Vietnam

We hand the body over to our partners in Vietnam or to a funeral home chosen by the family. That funeral home conducts the funeral.

How We Transport

By hearse to an airport in a country neighboring Ukraine, then by plane to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, usually with a layover. Transit time starts from 72 hours.

Urn with Ashes

Transporting an urn is simpler: at the border, ashes do not require a sanitary treatment certificate or a death certificate, though an embassy permit and a cremation certificate are required. The price is fixed in the contract.
