Summary. Thailand is far away, so the journey home includes a flight: a plane to an airport in a country next to Ukraine and then our vehicle to your town. The death certificate is issued in Thai by the district office, and for foreigners an autopsy is usually carried out. The body is released only on a letter from the embassy. We handle all the papers, the translations and the Embassy in parallel, and we work around the clock.

What to do if someone has died in Thailand
Most often it happens on holiday or while spending the winter there, when the family knows neither Thai nor the local rules. You do not need to search for anyone yourselves: call us at any hour and we will tell you what to do first. XREQUIEM manages the whole case from start to finish.
We listen and give you the price
We ask which city or island the body is on now and which documents already exist. At the same time we give you the amount to your town, and we fix the price in the contract.
The police or the hospital
If the person did not die in a hospital, the local police must be told as soon as possible, and they write a report. If the person died in a hospital, the hospital issues a confirmation of death. Neither of these is yet the death certificate.
An autopsy, if one is ordered
For foreigners in Thailand an autopsy is usually compulsory. It is carried out by forensic doctors. After the autopsy the body is released, and we will tell you exactly when.
The death certificate
With the police report or the hospital's confirmation, the death is registered at the district office (amphoe) or the municipality. There the death certificate is issued in Thai. We take care of the translation and the legalisation.
The embassy letter and the Ukrainian side
Thai hospitals and authorities release a foreigner's body on a letter from the embassy of their country. We contact the Embassy of Ukraine in Bangkok, submit the documents and register the death of the Ukrainian citizen.
The body and the coffin
The body goes into a hermetic zinc coffin, which is sealed. If the airline requires embalming, we arrange it in advance.
We take the deceased home
By air to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, most often Poland, then by road in our vehicle. We hand the deceased over to the family wherever you tell us.

Documents needed to bring the deceased home from Thailand
Here is what the papers are and who issues them. We confirm the full list for your case with the Thai authorities, because it depends on the place and cause of death.
What Thailand issues
- Police report, if the person did not die in a hospital. Without it the death cannot be registered.
- Hospital confirmation of death, if the person died in a hospital. It is not a death certificate.
- Death certificate: issued by the district office (amphoe) or the municipality. It is in Thai.
- Autopsy documents, if there was an autopsy. The report is written in Thai and takes a long time.
- The carrier's documents: the air waybill for the coffin and, if needed, an embalming certificate.
We go through these administrative steps on the family's behalf.
What we take on
- We obtain the reports, the certificate and the other papers.
- We obtain the Embassy letter for the release of the body.
- We translate the certificate, have it legalised at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and submit it to the Embassy of Ukraine.
- We book the air transport and prepare the coffin as the Ukrainian border requires.
- We draw up the customs statement for the Ukrainian border and attach the documents to it.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
- A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.
The general list of papers is on the Documents page. What to do in the first hours is on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Thailand
Ukraine has one mission in Thailand, the Embassy in Bangkok. The Thai death certificate is in Thai, so it is translated, legalised at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then submitted to the consul.
- A Thai hospital or morgue usually releases a body only on a letter from the embassy stating to whom it may be released. For a Ukrainian citizen we request this letter from the Embassy of Ukraine in Bangkok.
- Without the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin, issued by an authority of the country of death and certified by the Ukrainian consulate, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.
- How the consul registers the death, which papers are needed for the funeral allowance in Ukraine and whether a consular fee applies, we confirm before filing. The general rules for all countries are in the article below.
Usually you do not need to go to Bangkok: we prepare and submit the documents to the Embassy. More in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Thailand
Thailand is a long way from Ukraine, so the journey includes a flight. Planes are not flying to Ukraine at the moment, so the coffin flies to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, most often Poland. We choose how to travel and which flight to suit your case.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin and from any other town or island in Thailand: from a hospital, a morgue or the forensic medicine institute. Which airport the flight leaves from depends on where the body is and on the flight. Name the city, and we will give you the route and the amount.
Plane plus vehicle
A plane to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, where the coffin is met by our vehicle, which takes it to your town.
How the coffin travels by air
Airlines carry the coffin in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight, often with a transfer. We agree the documents with every country on the route before booking, so that the coffin is not held up at an airport.
How long it takes
The journey itself takes from 72 hours after collection. Most of the time usually goes on the documents, the autopsy, the embassy letter and booking the flight.
We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine. The Ukrainian border accepts a body only in a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. Ours is a coffin with a soldered zinc liner. Customs clearance is done on a written statement with documents, which we prepare. More on the Air transport page.
What to know about Thailand
A few rules of the country that affect timing and papers. Sources: the UK government guidance “What to do after a British person dies in Thailand” and its guidance on suspicious deaths in Thailand, the Dutch government page on death in Thailand, and guidance from the Australian and Swiss embassies in Bangkok (checked on 23 October 2026). They are not written for Ukrainian families, so we confirm each point with the Thai authorities for your case.
- Do not delay the decision. According to the British guidance, if the family has not arranged a funeral or transport within about 30 days, the body may be cremated and buried as unclaimed. So call us at once, even if you have not yet decided what to do.
- The autopsy and tissue samples. During an autopsy, tissue samples or organs may be kept for tests without the family's consent, and the family is not told. The autopsy report is written in Thai, takes about 45 working days, and is collected from the police who handled the case.
- A suspicious death. If the death is under investigation, the body is usually kept at the Police Forensic Science Institute for up to 30 days, after which a daily storage fee is charged.
- Cremation on the spot. In Thailand the dead are mostly cremated. Cremation is possible once the Thai authorities consider the cause of death established and the body is no longer needed for examination. If you are considering cremation there and bringing home the urn, tell us before we book the flight.
- Hospital bills. Hospitals usually release the body only after the bill for treatment has been paid. Show us the insurance policy: its terms often cover both the hospital and the transport.

Questions about repatriation from Thailand
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Thailand?
From €4,500 for the whole journey home. Everything the price includes is listed above, and we fix the final amount in the contract. What the price is made up of is explained in the article How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad.
How long does repatriation from Thailand take?
The journey itself takes from 72 hours. The papers usually take longer: the autopsy, the certificate from the district office, the translation and legalisation, the Embassy letter and the flight. We run everything in parallel.
Is an autopsy compulsory?
For foreigners in Thailand an autopsy is usually compulsory. An exception is possible if the person died in a hospital of a known cause; if the death was sudden, unnatural or violent, there will be an autopsy. You can object on religious grounds by telling the police, but the police do not have to agree. We stay in touch with the authorities and will tell you when the body is released.
Who issues the death certificate in Thailand?
The district office (amphoe) or the municipality for the place of death. The hospital issues only a confirmation of death, and the police a report: these are different documents, needed for the registration. The certificate is in Thai, so for Ukraine it is translated and legalised at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Is embalming needed?
It depends on the airline: some accept only embalmed bodies, and the flight from Thailand is long. So we arrange embalming straight away. More about preparing the body.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document showing that you are related and a power of attorney for us. We take care of the Thai documents, the translations, the legalisation, the Embassy letter and the registration at the Embassy.
Do I have to fly to Thailand?
In most cases, no. We take care of the documents and keep you updated by phone or on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If we need your signature in person, we will tell you in advance. More in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.
What kind of coffin is needed?
At the Ukrainian border, a hermetic metal coffin under official seal is required. What it looks like in Thailand depends on the airline's requirements, and we agree it in advance. Which coffins exist is on the Coffins page.
The person was on a package tour. Who pays for the transport?
If the policy provides for transporting the body, the insurer pays. Photograph the policy and send it to us: we will check the terms and contact the insurer ourselves. Better not to pay for the transport yourself until the insurer has agreed, or the compensation may not be paid. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home from Thailand?
Yes. Transporting an urn costs from €1,800. In Thailand the dead are mostly cremated, and the cremation can be done there. For the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate; it is also worth having the cremation certificate and telling the airline in advance. More on the Urn transport page.
