Summary. Kazakhstan is far away, so the journey home includes a flight: a plane to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, most often Poland, and then our vehicle to your town. The death is registered by the civil registry authority, and the documents are in the local language. Embalming is compulsory for taking a body out of the country. We handle all the papers, the translations and the Embassy, around the clock.

If it has just happened

What to do if someone has died in Kazakhstan
It often happens at work, while visiting relatives or on a journey. The family back home does not know the local rules and has no idea where to start. We organise every step in Kazakhstan ourselves, and XREQUIEM manages the whole case from start to finish. Call us at any hour and we will tell you what to do first.
We listen and give you the price
We ask which city the body is in now and which documents already exist. At the same time we give you the amount to your town, and we fix the price in the contract.
The medical certificate of death
It is issued by the medical facility. This is not yet the death certificate: it is the document used to register the death.
Registering the death
The death is registered by the civil registry authority in Kazakhstan. We do this under a notarised power of attorney, so you do not need to travel.
An autopsy, if one is ordered
It is possible when the cause of death is unknown or the death was sudden, unnatural or violent. In most cases the autopsy is done within a day, and then the body is released.
The Ukrainian side
We have the documents apostilled, translate them into Ukrainian and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Astana.
The body and the coffin
Embalming is compulsory for taking a body out of Kazakhstan. The body is then placed in a hermetic zinc coffin, which is sealed.
We take the deceased home
By air, most often via Istanbul, to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle. We hand the deceased over to the family wherever you tell us.

Documents needed to bring the deceased home from Kazakhstan
Here is what the papers are and who issues them. We confirm the full list for your case with the Kazakh authorities, because it depends on the city and the cause of death.
What Kazakhstan issues
- Medical certificate of death: issued by the medical facility. It is used to register the death.
- Death certificate: issued by the civil registry authority once the death is registered. It is in the local language and does not state the cause of death.
- Autopsy documents, if there was an autopsy. They are what shows the cause of death.
- Embalming certificate: a body is not taken out of Kazakhstan without embalming.
- Customs permit to take the body out in a soldered zinc coffin.
- The carrier's documents: the air waybill for the coffin.
We go through these administrative steps on the family's behalf.
What we take on
- We obtain the medical certificate, register the death and obtain the death certificate.
- We have the documents apostilled and translate them into Ukrainian.
- We submit the documents to the Embassy of Ukraine.
- We book the air transport and obtain the air waybill.
- We prepare the coffin as the Ukrainian border requires and draw up the customs statement for the Ukrainian border.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
- A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.
The general list of papers is on the Documents page. What to do in the first hours is on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Kazakhstan
Ukraine's mission in Kazakhstan is the Embassy in Astana. The Consulate General in Almaty was closed back in 2014, and its work passed to the consular section of the Embassy. So wherever in Kazakhstan the death occurred, the Ukrainian documents are handled in Astana.
- Kazakhstan and Ukraine are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention. The Kazakh death certificate is certified with an apostille and translated into Ukrainian.
- Without the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin, issued by an authority of the country of death and certified by the Ukrainian consulate, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.
- How the consul registers the death, which papers are needed for the funeral allowance in Ukraine and whether a consular fee applies, we confirm before filing.
Usually you do not need to go to Astana: we prepare and submit the documents to the Embassy. More in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is a long way from Ukraine, so the journey includes a flight. Planes are not flying to Ukraine at the moment, so the flight lands at an airport in a country next to Ukraine, most often Poland. We route the journey through Poland.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, Aktobe, Atyrau, Aktau and from any other town or village in Kazakhstan: from a hospital or a morgue. There are flights to Istanbul from Almaty and from some regional airports, such as Aktau or Shymkent. Which airport the flight leaves from depends on the city where the body is and on the flight. Name the city, and we will give you the route and the amount.
Plane plus vehicle
The plane flies, usually via Istanbul, to an airport in a country next to Ukraine. There the coffin is met by our vehicle, which takes it to your town.
How the coffin travels by air
Airlines carry the coffin in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight. We agree the documents with every country involved before booking, so that the coffin is not held up at the transfer airport.
How long it takes
The journey itself from Asia takes from 72 hours after collection. Most of the time usually goes on the documents, an autopsy if one is ordered, and booking the flight.
We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine. The Ukrainian border accepts a body only in a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. Ours is a coffin with a soldered zinc liner. Customs clearance is done on a written statement with documents, which we prepare. More on the Air transport page.
What to know about Kazakhstan
A few rules of the country that affect timing and papers. Sources: the UK government guidance for families “When someone dies in Kazakhstan” (14 May 2025) and the Kazakh government portal gov.kz. The guidance is written for British families, so we confirm each point with the Kazakh authorities for your case.
- The language of the documents. All papers in Kazakhstan are drawn up in the local language, and officials rarely speak English. We take care of the translation.
- The cause of death. The Kazakh death certificate does not state it. If the cause is needed for insurance or an estate, tell us at once: we will request the doctors' or the autopsy documents.
- An autopsy can be avoided. If the person was under a doctor's care and the police see no signs of violence, the family can waive the autopsy in writing. We will find out whether this is possible in your case.
- Registration online. If the deceased lived in Kazakhstan and had a local individual identification number (IIN), the death can be registered on the eGov.kz portal or at a Public Service Centre (TsON). Registering a death is free of charge.
- Cremation. For a long time there was none in Kazakhstan. The legal basis for crematoria was approved in early 2026, and the country's first crematorium opened in Almaty on 30 April 2026. If the family is thinking about an urn, tell us and we will check the conditions for cremation.
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Kazakhstan in 2026?

Questions about repatriation from Kazakhstan
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Kazakhstan?
From €3,000 for the whole journey home. Everything the price includes is listed above, and we fix the exact amount in the contract. What the price is made up of is explained in the article How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad.
How long does repatriation from Kazakhstan take?
The journey itself takes from 72 hours. The papers take longer: registering the death, the autopsy if there was one, the apostille, the Embassy and the flight. We run them in parallel.
Is an autopsy compulsory?
Not always. According to government guidance for families, an autopsy is possible when the cause of death is unknown or the death was sudden, unnatural or violent. If the person was under a doctor's care and there are no signs of violence, the autopsy can be waived in writing. In most cases it is done within a day, and then the body is released.
Who issues the death certificate in Kazakhstan?
The civil registry authority, once the death has been registered. We do this under a notarised power of attorney. The certificate is in the local language and does not state the cause of death, so for Ukraine we have it apostilled and translated.
Is embalming needed?
Yes. Embalming is compulsory for taking a body out of Kazakhstan, and the type is chosen to suit the case. We arrange it on the first day. More about preparing the body.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document showing that you are related and a power of attorney for us. We take care of the Kazakh documents, the apostille, the translations and the Embassy.
Do I have to fly to Kazakhstan?
In most cases, no. We take care of the documents and keep you updated by phone or on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If we need your signature in person, we will tell you in advance. More in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.
What kind of coffin is needed?
Kazakhstan requires a soldered zinc coffin for taking a body out, and the Ukrainian border requires a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. So one such coffin meets the rules of both countries. Which coffins exist is on the Coffins page.
Will insurance cover the transport?
Yes, if the policy provides for transporting the body. Photograph the policy and send it to us: we will check the terms and contact the insurer ourselves. Better not to pay for the transport yourself until the insurer has agreed, or the compensation may not be paid. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home from Kazakhstan?
Yes. Transporting an urn costs from €800. For the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate; it is also worth having the cremation certificate. More on the Urn transport page.
