Summary. Uzbekistan is far away, so the journey home includes a flight: a plane to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, most often Poland, and then our vehicle to your town. The death is registered by the civil registry office (known locally as ZAGS). Burials there usually happen quickly and morgues have few refrigerated spaces, so the decision to bring the deceased home is best made in the first hours. We handle all the papers, the translations and the Embassy, around the clock.

If it has just happened
- Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact hospital and police.
- Mention any insurance policy. We coordinate with the insurer.
- Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. Enough for a price. The passport comes later.
What to do if someone has died in Uzbekistan
It often happens while visiting relatives, at work or on a trip to Samarkand and Bukhara. The family back home does not know the local rules and has no idea where to start. We organise every step in Uzbekistan ourselves, and XREQUIEM manages the whole case from start to finish. Call us at any hour and we will tell you what to do first.
We listen and give you the price
We ask which city the body is in now and which documents already exist. At the same time we give you the amount to your town, and we fix the price in the contract.
The medical certificate of death
It is issued by the medical facility. This is not yet the death certificate: it is the document used to register the death.
Registering the death at the civil registry
The death is registered at the civil registry office for the place where the person lived or died, no later than three days after the medical certificate is issued. We do this under a notarised power of attorney.
An autopsy, if one is ordered
If the authorities order an autopsy, we stay in touch with them and will tell you when the body is released.
The Ukrainian side
We have the documents apostilled, translate them into Ukrainian and submit them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Tashkent.
The body and the coffin
The body is embalmed and placed in a hermetic zinc coffin, which is sealed. Because of the heat and the shortage of refrigeration, we do this step as quickly as possible.
We take the deceased home
By air, most often via Istanbul, to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, then by road in our vehicle. We hand the deceased over to the family wherever you tell us.

Documents needed to bring the deceased home from Uzbekistan
Here is what the papers are and who issues them. We confirm the full list for your case with the Uzbek authorities, because it depends on the city and the cause of death.
What Uzbekistan issues
- Medical certificate of death: issued by the medical facility. It is used to register the death.
- Death certificate: issued by the civil registry office once the death is registered. A relative can collect it, or we can, under a notarised power of attorney from the next of kin.
- Autopsy documents, if there was an autopsy.
- Embalming certificate and the coffin documents for the airline.
- The carrier's documents: the air waybill for the coffin.
We go through these administrative steps on the family's behalf.
What we take on
- We obtain the medical certificate, register the death and obtain the death certificate.
- We have the documents apostilled and translate them into Ukrainian.
- We submit the documents to the Embassy of Ukraine.
- We book the air transport and obtain the air waybill.
- We prepare the coffin as the Ukrainian border requires and draw up the customs statement for the Ukrainian border.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
- A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.
The general list of papers is on the Documents page. What to do in the first hours is on the page What to do if a loved one dies abroad.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Uzbekistan
Ukraine's mission in Uzbekistan is the Embassy in Tashkent. Wherever in the country the death occurred, the Ukrainian documents are handled there.
- Uzbekistan, like Ukraine, is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention; it has applied there since 2012. The Uzbek death certificate is certified with an apostille and translated into Ukrainian. For most official documents the apostille is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, and we take care of it.
- Without the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin, issued by an authority of the country of death and certified by the Ukrainian consulate, the body will not be allowed across the Ukrainian border.
- How the consul registers the death, which papers are needed for the funeral allowance in Ukraine and whether a consular fee applies, we confirm before filing.
Usually you do not need to go to Tashkent: we prepare and submit the documents to the Embassy. More in the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is a long way from Ukraine, so the journey includes a flight. Planes are not flying to Ukraine at the moment, so the flight lands at an airport in a country next to Ukraine, most often Poland. We route the journey through Poland. We choose the route and the flight for your case, so that the deceased spends as little time on the road as possible.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Fergana, Namangan, Andijan, Khiva and from any other town or village in Uzbekistan: from a hospital or a morgue. There are flights to Istanbul from Tashkent and also from Samarkand, Bukhara and Fergana. Which airport the flight leaves from depends on the city where the body is and on the flight. Name the city, and we will give you the route and the amount.
Plane plus vehicle
The plane flies, usually via Istanbul, to an airport in a country next to Ukraine. There the coffin is met by our vehicle, which takes it to your town.
How the coffin travels by air
Airlines carry the coffin in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight. We agree the documents with every country involved before booking, so that the coffin is not held up at the transfer airport.
How long it takes
The journey itself from Asia takes from 72 hours after collection. Most of the time usually goes on the documents, an autopsy if one is ordered, and booking the flight.
We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine. The Ukrainian border accepts a body only in a hermetic metal coffin under official seal. Ours is a coffin with a soldered zinc liner. Customs clearance is done on a written statement with documents, which we prepare. More on the Air transport page.
What to know about Uzbekistan
A few rules of the country that affect timing and papers. Sources: the UK government guidance for families “Bereavement information: Uzbekistan” (7 January 2025) and the Uzbek government guide to registering a death on gov.uz. The guidance is written for British families, so we confirm each point with the Uzbek authorities for your case.
- Burials happen quickly. In Uzbekistan a burial usually takes place within 48 hours. If you want to bring the deceased home, tell us as early as you can.
- Little refrigeration. According to the government guidance, facilities for storing and embalming bodies in Uzbekistan are limited, and a body deteriorates quickly. So we arrange the embalming and the coffin first.
- No burial without registration. It is forbidden to bury someone without registering the death at the civil registry office. Registration must be done within three days of the medical certificate being issued, so we start at once.
- The certificate by power of attorney. Someone other than the next of kin can collect the death certificate with a notarised power of attorney from the next of kin. We will tell you how to draw one up from Ukraine.
- Costs. If there is no insurance, the family bears the cost of the transport. So it is worth finding the policy and sending it to us on the very first day.
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Uzbekistan in 2026?
The price covers the whole journey of the body home, air leg included, and we fix it in the contract. We work without prepayment. A funeral in Ukraine is priced separately.

Questions about repatriation from Uzbekistan
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Uzbekistan?
From €3,000 for the whole journey home. Everything the price includes is listed above, and we fix the exact amount in the contract. What the price is made up of is explained in the article How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad.
How long does repatriation from Uzbekistan take?
The journey itself takes from 72 hours. The papers take longer: registering the death, the autopsy if there was one, the apostille, the Embassy and the flight. We run them in parallel.
Why is there a need to hurry?
In Uzbekistan burials usually take place within 48 hours, and morgues have few refrigerated spaces. So the sooner you call, the sooner we can collect and prepare the body.
Who issues the death certificate in Uzbekistan?
The civil registry office (ZAGS) for the place where the deceased lived or died. The application is made by the relatives or the medical facility, and we do it under a notarised power of attorney. For Ukraine we have the certificate apostilled and translated.
Is embalming needed?
In most cases, yes: some airlines accept only embalmed bodies, and it is a long journey. In Uzbekistan it is best done as quickly as possible, so we arrange the embalming on the first day. More about preparing the body.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport (or a photo of it), your passport, a document showing that you are related and a power of attorney for us. We take care of the Uzbek documents, the apostille, the translations and the Embassy.
Do I have to fly to Uzbekistan?
In most cases, no. We take care of the documents and keep you updated by phone or on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If we need your signature in person, we will tell you in advance. More in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.
What kind of coffin is needed?
At the Ukrainian border, a hermetic metal coffin under official seal is required. What it looks like on the outside depends on the airline's requirements, and we agree it in advance. Which coffins exist is on the Coffins page.
Will insurance cover the transport?
Yes, if the policy provides for transporting the body. Photograph the policy and send it to us: we will check the terms and contact the insurer ourselves. Better not to pay for the transport yourself until the insurer has agreed, or the compensation may not be paid. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home from Uzbekistan?
Yes. Transporting an urn costs from €800. For the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate; it is also worth having the cremation certificate. More on the Urn transport page.
