What Greece requires when a body is brought in

To bring a body into Greece you need a certificate from the Greek consulate, and the coffin is sealed in the presence of the consular authorities. Here are the requirements one by one, each with a link to its source.

Who authorises entry

  • To bring a body into Greece, a Greek consular authority issues a "certificate of transfer of a body from abroad to Greece". The procedure is open to relatives of deceased Greek citizens and citizens of other countries; the application is filed in person at the consulate (Greek National Registry of Administrative Procedures, Ministry of Foreign Affairs). mitos.gov.gr
  • The coffin with the body is sealed before the Greek consular authorities, by appointment. mitos.gov.gr

Language of the documents

  • Foreign documents for the Greek consulate are certified with an apostille where required and translated into Greek, with the translator's signature certified by the consulate. mitos.gov.gr

Embalming and the coffin

  • For transfer to Greece the body must be embalmed in accordance with scientific rules. mitos.gov.gr
  • The body is placed in a closed metal box whose bottom is covered with a 5 cm layer of absorbent material soaked in an antiseptic and embalming substance; the metal box is enclosed in an airtight wooden coffin and fixed so that it cannot move. mitos.gov.gr

We do the embalming and prepare the coffin to these rules in Ukraine, before the coffin is sealed.

How a transfer to Greece goes

  1. We collect the deceased

From the hospital or morgue in the town where the death occurred. We draw up the Ukrainian documents for taking the body out of the country.

  2. We prepare the body and the coffin

Embalming and the coffin are done in Ukraine to the Greek rules set out above.

  3. We gather the documents for the consulate

We collect the papers the Greek consulate asks for and arrange the Greek translations and apostilles where they are needed.

  4. The coffin is sealed and the certificate issued

The coffin is sealed before the Greek consular authorities, and the consulate issues the transfer certificate.

  5. Handover in Greece

The deceased travels to Greece with the consular documents and is handed over to the funeral home the family has chosen.

Documents for the Greek consulate

The documents for the transfer certificate are submitted to the Greek consulate. We prepare the statement that the coffin is suitable for transport.

  • Documents include a hospital or clinic medical certificate on the cause of death, confirmation from the health authorities that embalming was done, the local death record, and a funeral home statement that the body is in a coffin suitable for transport. mfa.gr, archived copy

The Ukrainian side

We also take care of the paperwork for taking the body out of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian paperwork is the same for every country; it is all on the page “Repatriation of a body from Ukraine to another country”.

Who receives the deceased in Greece

We arrange the transport and hand the deceased over to the funeral home in Greece that the family chooses.

The farewell in Greece is then prepared by that funeral home. It receives the deceased from us in a sealed coffin, together with the consular documents.

An urn with ashes

  • For ashes, the Greek consulate issues a separate certificate of transfer of ashes. The ashes travel in a sealed urn accompanied by the cremation certificate; the death record (apostilled where required and translated into Greek) and the exit permit document are also submitted. mitos.gov.gr

If an urn with ashes needs to go to Greece, we can do that too. We will also quote the price for an urn once we have your request; the button is below.

Tell us the country and your city in Ukraine. Once the route is clear, we will give you the price.

Questions about repatriation from Ukraine to Greece

Do we have to go to the Greek consulate ourselves?

The certificate for transferring a body to Greece (Pistopoiitiko metaforas sorou) is issued by the Greek consular authority, on documents submitted by a relative or third party. (mfa.gr, archived copy) The documents do not have to be submitted by a relative. Whether we can submit them for you with your power of attorney, we check with the consulate in advance, and we tell you whether you need to go yourselves.

Can a non-Greek citizen be buried in Greece?

Yes. The entry procedure is open to relatives of citizens of other countries too; see "Who authorises entry" above. Tell us the deceased's citizenship when you call, and we will check which documents the consulate will ask for.

What is the Pistopoiitiko metaforas sorou?

It is the Greek name of the consular certificate for transferring a body to Greece, the document described above under “Who authorises entry”. We gather and prepare the papers it is issued on.

What does the family arrange in Greece?

Choose the funeral home in Greece that will receive the deceased and prepare the farewell, and tell us the town where the burial will be. We look after everything from Ukraine up to the handover to that funeral home.
