Repatriation of a body from Ukraine to Canada

We take the deceased to Canada from your town in Ukraine. We obtain the Ukrainian permits, have the death certificate translated and prepare the body for the journey. In Canada, the deceased is received by the funeral home chosen by the family.

What Canada requires when a body is brought in

The border requirements are set out by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in its memorandum. The source is linked next to each point.

Entry rules differ between provinces, so we check them for the place of burial.

Burial permit

  • Ontario: if the death occurred outside Ontario but the burial will take place in the province, a burial, transit or removal permit from the jurisdiction where the death occurred is needed. ontario.ca

The death certificate and its language

  • On import, human remains must be accompanied by a death certificate. cbsa-asfc.gc.ca
  • If the death certificate is in a language other than English or French, a translation into one of these official languages must be provided. cbsa-asfc.gc.ca

The container for the body

  • As a minimum, human remains must be transported in a leak-proof container, according to a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) memorandum. cbsa-asfc.gc.ca
  • Some air carriers may require human remains to be transported in a hermetically sealed container. cbsa-asfc.gc.ca

Canadian consular services and documents

The Government of Canada explains which documents travel with the body and how Canadian consular services can help if a Canadian citizen has died.

  • For international transport, the remains must be accompanied by a copy of the death certificate that includes the cause of death; other documents may be required depending on the countries involved. travel.gc.ca
  • If a Canadian citizen has died, Canadian consular officials can authenticate the local death certificate for insurance or repatriation purposes after it has been authenticated by the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs, if required. travel.gc.ca

The Ukrainian side

We obtain the permits and certificates needed to take the body out of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian paperwork is the same for every country; it is all on the page “Repatriation of a body from Ukraine to another country”.

Who receives the deceased in Canada

We arrange the transport and hand the deceased over to the funeral home in Canada that the family chooses.

  • The funeral service provider in the country where the person died is responsible for verifying the document requirements. travel.gc.ca

When the body leaves Ukraine, that provider is us, so we do this check ourselves. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German, so we can make arrangements with the family and the funeral home in Canada in English.

An urn with ashes

  • Cremated remains do not require a death certificate. It is recommended to carry copies of the death and cremation certificates and to use a container that can easily be scanned (cardboard, wood or plastic). cbsa-asfc.gc.ca
  • Not all airlines transport cremated remains and some only as cargo; the container must clear airport X-ray screening and the airline should be notified in advance. travel.gc.ca

We can also take an urn with ashes to Canada. We will tell you the price once we have talked.

Questions about repatriation from Ukraine to Canada

What language must the documents be in for Canada?

English or French: a certificate issued in any other language needs a translation into one of the two. We take care of the translation.

What is checked at the Canadian border?

At the border, the remains can be released if the death certificate clearly shows the person did not have a communicable disease. Under the same rule (CBSA D19-9-3, point 5): if the certificate gives no cause of death or shows a communicable disease, remains in a hermetically sealed container can be released with an advisory not to open it; if the container is not hermetically sealed, or there is no death certificate, the screening officer must contact a quarantine officer. (cbsa-asfc.gc.ca)

Will Canadian consular officials authenticate a Ukrainian death certificate?

Yes, if a Canadian citizen has died: the consulate can authenticate the local certificate for insurance or repatriation purposes, after the local foreign ministry has authenticated it where that is required.

The burial will be in Ontario. What is needed?

If the death occurred outside Ontario, you need the burial, transit or removal permit issued where the person died.
