Death of a Ukrainian in China: Who Pays for Repatriation

Ukrainians go to China to work, study, and travel. Who can pay for bringing a person home depends on the purpose of their stay. Below are the main options and what to check first.

How much does repatriation from China cost

The price is fixed in the contract before transport begins. It depends on the city in China, the flight and layovers, embalming (which is mandatory in China for exporting a body), and the destination city in Ukraine. The price includes documents, preparation of the body, a coffin with a zinc liner, transport, and handover to the family. A burial coffin is provided free of charge. Transit takes from 72 hours.

If the person worked in China

Foreign nationals legally employed in China must be enrolled by their employer in five types of social insurance, including work-related injury insurance. This is required by the Interim Measures for Social Insurance System Coverage of Foreigners Working within the People's Republic of China (Order No. 16 of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the PRC of 2011, as amended by Order No. 54 of 23.12.2024).

If the death is work-related, work-related injury insurance pays a funeral grant equal to 6 times the previous year's average monthly wage in the region, as well as other benefits to the family (Regulation on Work-Related Injury Insurance, Art. 39). If the employer did not arrange the insurance, the employer must bear these costs directly.

What to do: ask the employer for the employment contract and proof of social insurance enrollment. We will advise you on which death-related documents will be needed to claim the payout.

If the person studied in China

The Ministry of Education of China requires international students studying for more than 6 months to have comprehensive group insurance, with a death benefit of at least 100,000 yuan. Chinese Government Scholarship students are insured by their university. Whether the policy covers body repatriation depends on its terms: some policies include this service. Ask the university's international office to send you the policy terms.

If the person was traveling

Travel insurance often includes body repatriation. Until the insurance company gives its approval, do not hire a local funeral home on your own, as this may void your coverage. Often, a policy only pays for transport to an airport or the border, while the family pays for the rest of the journey to their city. Funeral allowance in Ukraine

After returning home, the family can apply for a funeral allowance. For this, the consul issues a certificate, which is then submitted to the social protection office in Ukraine. How to do this: funeral allowance 2026.

An urn is less expensive than a body

If the budget is limited, the family can choose cremation in China and transport the urn. An urn does not require embalming or a hermetically sealed coffin. We arrange cremation only together with the transport of the urn. Read more: cremation in China and urn transport.
