Cremation in Vietnam and Urn Transport to Ukraine

Cremation is common in Vietnam, and some families choose it because bringing an urn home is simpler than transporting a body. We arrange cremation only together with transporting the urn to Ukraine.

30-second summary.

  • Cremation must be completed within the body storage time limits: up to 48 hours without refrigeration, or up to 7 days in a refrigerated chamber.
  • The ashes must be transported in a leakproof, waterproof, and shatterproof container.
  • At the Vietnamese border, the ashes must be declared for quarantine.
  • To enter Ukraine with an urn, you need a death certificate, a cremation certificate, and a certificate of no foreign objects inside.
  • The price is fixed in the contract.

Who gives consent for cremation

The family makes the decision. When a foreigner dies in Vietnam, the provincial Department of Foreign Affairs is notified and works with the embassy of the country of citizenship and the relatives. If the family is in Ukraine, our partners in Vietnam act under a power of attorney with an apostille and a Vietnamese translation. We check the exact requirements of the specific crematorium on the spot.

Timelines

Vietnamese sanitary regulations limit how long a body can be kept before cremation: up to 48 hours without refrigeration, up to 7 days at temperatures up to 4 °C, and longer only at −10 °C or below. Because of this, cremation is scheduled within the first few days, while the documents for the urn are prepared in parallel.

How much it costs

The crematorium sets the fee for the cremation itself. We do not quote separate figures; for the full cost of cremation and urn transport, the price is fixed in the contract.

Urn requirements for transport

Under Vietnamese rules, ashes must be transported in a container that is leakproof, waterproof, and will not break in transit. The crematorium seals the urn. We check the airline's specific requirements for the urn when booking the flight.

How to bring an urn from Vietnam to Ukraine

At the Vietnamese border, the ashes are declared to the quarantine service (Form 11 to Decree 165/2026) to obtain a quarantine certificate.

At the Ukrainian border, the following documents are required for the urn:

  • death certificate;
  • cremation certificate;
  • certificate of no foreign objects inside the urn, certified by the Embassy of Ukraine.

Starting from September 11, 2026, Vietnamese documents are certified with an apostille and translated into Ukrainian. For details, see: customs clearance for an urn.

Can you carry the urn yourself

Yes, if a family member is in Vietnam. We will prepare the documents and explain what to take to the border. Issues usually happen because of a missing certificate or translation, or specific airline rules. If the family is in Ukraine, we transport the urn ourselves.
